The town of Rota is a Spanish municipality located in the province of Cádiz, in the autonomous community of Andalusia. Its geographical coordinates are 36 ° 37 'N, 6 ° 21' W. Moon Castle is a fortress located in the Spanish town of Rota. Declared of Cultural Interest with the category of monument, was built by the house of Arcos, jurisdictional lords of the town for centuries. Currently it is the seat of the municipal council, which is owned. Apparently the name of the castle comes from the marriage of Pedro Ponce de León, eldest son and heir to the ill-fated I Marquess of Cadiz, a daughter of Alvaro de Luna, who also named the Castle of Mairena del Alcor Moon.

Its plan is rectangular, with five towers on the perimeter and articulated around a central courtyard Gothic style, with painted baseboards with Moorish motifs.

It is possible that the castle rises in the same place as the Muslim ribat that existed at the site, known as the descriptions as Rábita Ruta, a name that seems to come from Latin Speculum Rotae. Fernando III conquered the village Muslims in 1251, being re-conquered in 1264 by Alfonso X, after the Moorish uprising of that year.

Guzman el Bueno in 1297, received the Lordship of Sanlucar, territory which included the place of Rota. Therefore, the construction of the castle has been attributed to said noble. However there is no documentary proof of this and style courtyard and staircase is clearly back to the time of Guzman. In 1309, the place of Rota was segregated Manor Sanlúcar as part of the dowry of Isabel Perez de Guzman, daughter of Guzman el Bueno, to marry Fernán Ponce de León, founder of the house of Arcos, past the castle to that lineage, whose weapons include it in several places. During the government of Ponce de Leon, the castle was home of the governor of the town and chapter house until 1750.

In 1909 the Marquis de San Marcial bought it for 15,000 pesetas for use as a summer residence, undertaking major reforms in it. In 1943 José León de Carranza acquired for 200,000 pesetas, conditioning it as College of San Ramon and San Jose Hospital, institutions served by the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians Salesian community who donated to roteño town hall, leaving the building in 1982. In 1987, after years of neglect, the council began restoration works were not completed until 1999, when it opened as a consistory.
