Photographer's Note
Holy Week in Seville (Spanish: Semana Santa de Sevilla) is one of the most important traditional events of the city. It is celebrated in the week leading up to Easter, and is one of the better known religious events within Spain. This week features the procession of pasos, floats of lifelike wooden sculptures of individual scenes of the events of the Passion, or images of the Virgin Mary showing restrained grief for the torture and killing of her Son. Some of the sculptures are of great antiquity and are considered artistic masterpieces, as well as being culturally and spiritually important to the local Catholic population.
During Holy Week, the city is crowded with residents and visitors, drawn by the spectacle and atmosphere. The impact is particularly strong for the Catholic community.
The processions are organized by hermandades and cofradνas, religious brotherhoods. During the processions, members precede the pasos (of which there are up to three in each procession) dressed in penitential robes, and, with few exceptions, hoods. They may also be accompanied by brass bands.
The processions work along a designated route from their home churches and chapels to the Cathedral, usually via a central viewing area and back. The processions from the suburban barrios may take 14 hours to return to their home churches.

Hello Deniz, whilst the subject is a good choice for mono treatment I fear that it will not get the praise that it deserves to here on TE where colour seems to be King.
The striking shapes of the somehow menacing hats allied to the crucifix provide an interesting scene, the contrast has been well handled and the format fine.
Best regards Les

Hi Deniz,
A ceremony that I would have liked to witness and to shoot.
I'm guessing that it isn't the kind of event that is easy to shoot, surrounded by a huge crowd and rubbing elbows with other enthusiastic people that wants to be on the first row as well.
I like the tight frame, the mystery that you have created by a full sunny day, but the vignetting is a little bit over the top. It's too noticeable in the white parts and your photo would gain in quality by keeping this effect on the subtle side.
The cross strongly attracts the eye and is probably the "point of entry" in your shot, so it's a good thing you've off-centered it.
Cheers!

I have been trying for years to go to Spain for the Semana Santa to shoot the processions but every year, for one reason or another, I am traveling for business and can never make it... so I envy you the fact that you were there and could see and photograph what I have been longing to do for a long time :)
besides, Seville is always worth a trip!
the fascination of these hoods is always linked to the attention they draw on the eyes - no matter where they look, it's always hunting...
weren't you tempted to take a close shot? :)

Hello Deniz
I don't know about you, but I find these costumes both faintly ridiculous and somewhat frightening, reminding me as they do (quite unreasonably) of the Klu Klux Klan. Of course I'm a born-again atheist. No matter: photographically this is a fine shot, very well composed, and closely, tightly framed. And you weren't using a big lens either.

I was interested in your Seville photos and I see you were during Semana Santa. But only one shot from it. Why? I am sure it must be a great attraction to see the people in these Ku Klux Klan hats (I knew about it and forgot, and it was not possible to go there in this time.) On the other hand, I can imagine the crowd, I know how it is from Cologne Carnival. So I am glad I will see jacarandas instead. Also strange that you were only in Sevilla and not in Granada or Cordoba. I go to Istanbul and then visit Bursa and Cappadocia as well.
I like the mystery here, a bit horrifying.

Fantastic shot, full of religious atributes and eschatological symbolism.. tensed, thick, sinister..
PS
You can only guess how long time I needed to recall my old TE password to tell u this way, how we miss.. That's true surprise but it seems that only at TE I can find you active..
Best!
