Photographer's Note

Over the last couple of months I have seen several ducks along the Rio Milanos, which runs below my property, with their newly hatched chicks. Most of these have now disappeared and I do not think many ducklings survive because of predators, possibly snakes and terrapins, and other dangers. This duck lives nearby on the river and I often see her when I walk along it. Yesterday evening she brought her family up from the river onto our terrace and we gave her some of our chickens’ corn. The ducklings are about a week old and although there were originally sixteen of them, now they number only seven. The father is a white duck, which accounts for the two yellow chicks and one mottled one in the brood. Most ducks in the area are hybrid because of domestic ducks escaping and mating with the wild ducks.
