Photographer's Note
The village of Sapanta is famous for its cemetery. The original character of the cemetery is first of all suggested by its name: Cimitirul Vesel that means The Merry Cemetery. It is a special kind of graveyard, with wooden crosses painted in vivid colors. Each cross is different and covered with paintings that depict scenes from the life of each person buried there. Some even have funny lyrics about the way they lived their lives. You can see over 800 colorful oak crosses there.
The first cross in the Merry Cemetery of Sapanta was painted in 1935, by its founder, Stan Ioan Patras. He died in 1977 and his creation has been continued to this day and carried on by Patras's apprentice, Dumitu Pop.
Most cemeteries around the world are quiet. The Merry Cemetery of Sapanta is different - many people come to enjoy themselves. Visit Sapanta! It is an interesting and unique destination.

Hello Wiktor,
this cemetery is really extraordinary, a very interesting place for the unusual mentality and cultural interest it conveys. I like very much the way you filled your frame with these exceptional tombstones at different depths. The designs, pictures and inscriptions are particularly attractive, interesting and touching -and merry too:) Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
Ourania
