Photographer's Note
I found this boy in the center of Bucharest.I went closer towards him to take a shot because he looked so affectionate towards his cigar.I asked him why is he smoking. He told me that he is not addicted, but he smokes because he does it hearted.I'm not a smoker and I don't
want to bring smoking in a good light, just a photo and a
story.

bit surreal (seeing young boy with a cigar) but on the other hand - damn down-to-earth scene...unbelievable encounter in photographic terms (at least...;-))
i like the fact that practically everything else but the model is darkened forcing us clearly to focus on him and his smoking activity (which is, in fact, the key)

Close encounters of people photography...
C'mon Horatiu, smoking is as joyful as photography, one is deadly, the other even deadlier. You decide which one is worse (at least you'll be beaten and your camera broken, remember?)
The guy looks at the photographer in such a manner that it is almost impossible to believe that you did not know each other before. Therefore i find this "captured" moment even more interesting.
I like the post treatment in this one, compared to the original, now it is more sombre.
Have a nice day,
Deniz

the post processing is excellent here. And the scene surprising as Jerzy mentionned. Great portrait.

Stunning portrait Horatiu - I see a lot of Polonaise influence in this one. The closeness of the subject, the eye contact - exceptional! The enormous cigar looks almost quite ridiculous in this young boys hand. He obviously thinks he looks cool. Love the meerest hint of colour that you kept.
Very, very good work my friend.

Hello Horatiu,
He has a certain look about him this boy, as if he has just stepped out of a film noir. An excellent portrait that captures his expression perfectly.

Very gripping shot of this young boy.
The B/W composition adds lot of energy in to it.
Good control of light in the frame Congrats and TFS

his "rebel without a cause" style posing is superb. that he is handsome is another striking feature of this shot. the cigar really looks strange in his hands as he doesn't look like a tycoon! I love this portrait a lot. Oh, and the tint is great.

hello Horatiu,
You have the same good eye like Diane ARbus , she also took photos from people like this, with a social touch, sometimes very extreme. i like the PP very much, it makes it even more complete ! congrats, you are really talented !!!

Bonsoir, Horatiu.

You makes giant steps, Horatiiu !!!

Hi Horatiu,
why did you re-posted it? Well, for me it was just perfect as it was. It is still perfect, hard to compare since I cannot see previous version. I just remeber to have in my first favorities. :) Now I have to go through all the trouble to make it favourite again. :P I do not remember my exact comment, I guess it was about something like: oh, it is just perfect. His passion for smoking is so greatly felt. For me one of the greatest portrait I've seen (yes, even after a few months being here). :) Excellent!
Kisses,
Jeri

Salut Horatiu
Tu as parfaitement raison, celle ci est bien supérieure à ta version originale. Je suis complétement ok avec le commentaire de Grazyna, le petit truc qui est derrière sa tête me perturbe. J'aurais bien aimé un peu de fumée - sans quoi, elle est extra -

I've looked at both versions on two different screen, just to see if I would change idea. But no. Then, I'll go against the general opinion here: I prefer your first version!
I guess that you might wanna know why... Or not. But I will tell you nevertheless. First, the more shaky reason, the sepia. Shaky, because it is more a question of taste. I'm not a big fan of sepia. I will admit that your version is not bad though. Kind of light, which is quite pleasing. But somehow, I miss the more natural tone of his skin... So, done with the shaky reason.
What I miss here the most is his right arm. You have darken quite a lot the background. I understand, but I think in the process, you have lost his arm. And in my opinion, this arm was essential, giving an air of "I don't give a damn!" about the boy, that is less strong in this new version. And somehow, we are also loosing the pants... And those pants speak clear and sound too! They have meaning on who this young guy want to project, his "persona"...
Ok, the last point is that there is that white line around his left shoulder... on the wall! It was there on your previous version but less evident. For me, it doesn't work. Personally, I would leave the stains of the wall, and the metal thing, because they also speak loud about the place, but I will do something with that white line...
Somehow, I think you've lost sight of the guy here...

Hello Horatiu,
I see you're turning a bit to the portrait side by the photos you've been posting lately, and I see you get close, really close...
Like on this one where the hand and cigar look so huge.
I like the glance of the boy and his look, as if he was defying while he's smoking his cigar.
This is one of the best and most interesting portraits i've seen here lately, even if smoking is indeed a dangerous 'hobbie'.
Cheers.

First I think it's an excellent portrait, full of life, with interesting pov being a bit higher than him, nice looking young man too:-). I love the bold attitude, and most of all his look and the the texture of the skin on hand and face is superb. The light also is very well balanced. Looking at the original I think I am half way between both versions: I would like to see more details like in the original (background, arm) that I find important to the context and that halo behind the head disturbs me somehow in the repost. I do like the sepia a lot. Very good work dear friend, a pleasure to discover each of your pics !
Have a nice Sunday
