Exemplo notvel da arquitectura militar do sc XVIII e considerado por muitos historiadores como uma das mais poderosas fortalezas do mundo.

No sculo XVII, a posio estratgica do monte da Graa, ocupada por tropas espanholas no contexto da Guerra da Restaurao da independncia, muito caro custou a Portugal durante o cerco a Elvas (1658-1659).

Um sculo mais tarde, durante a Guerra dos Sete Anos (1756-1763), a cidade sofreu novo stio (1762). Com esse fato em mente, sob o reinado de D. Jos I (1750-1777), tendo o Marqus de Pombal chamado o Marechal Wilhelm von Schaumburg-Lippe, conde de Lippe para reorganizar o Exrcito portugus, determinou-lhe traar planos para a modernizao daquela praa-forte.

Os trabalhos do Forte da Graa iniciaram-se em 1763, estendendo-se at ao reinado de Dna. Maria I (1777-1816), que a inaugurou em 1792, com o nome de Forte Conde de Lippe, militar que havia proposto a sua construo e que comandou o Exrcito portugus entre 1762 e 1764.

Para dirigir as grandiosas obras foi escolhido o Engenheiro ttienne, sendo este pouco tempo depois substitudo pelo coronel Guillaume Louis Antoine de Valler.

O forte resistiu s tropas espanholas durante a chamada Guerra das Laranjas (1801) e, mais tarde, no contexto da Guerra Peninsular, s tropas do general Nicolas Jean de Dieu Soult, que a bombardearam (1811), no chegando a tom-la.

Utilizado no passado como priso militar, em nossos dias encontra-se conservado em excelente estado, ainda como base militar.

Striking example of military architecture of the eighteenth century and considered by many historians as one of the most powerful fortresses in the world.

In the seventeenth century, the strategic position of the "Monte da Graa", occupied by Spanish troops in the War of Restoration of independence, very expensive cost to Portugal during the siege to Drogheda (1658-1659).

A century later, during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763), the city has new site (1762). With this fact in mind, under the reign of King D. Jos I (1750-1777), and the Marquis de Pombal called the Marshal Wilhelm von Schaumburg-Lippe, Count of Lippe to reorganize the Portuguese Army, ordered him to map out plans for modernization from a stronghold.

The work of the Forte of Grace began in 1763, extending up to the reign of DNA. Maria I (1777-1816), which opened in 1792 under the name of Fort Conde de Lippe, military which had proposed its construction and who commanded the Portuguese Army between 1762 and 1764.

To address the great works was chosen ttienne engineer, shortly after being replaced by Colonel Louis Antoine de Guillaume Vallerosa.

The strong Spanish troops resisted the call during the War of the Oranges (1801), and later in the Peninsular War, the troops of General Nicolas Jean de Dieu Soult, who bombed the (1811), not getting to take it.

Used in the past as a military prison, in our days is kept as a military base.
