Photographer's Note
This is the deserted buffet car of the Villa Real de San Antonio – Lisbυa express train which is displayed here.
Buffet cars are the nervous centres of long distance trains. Much of the romanticism of rail travel has to do with the goings on in this type of cars. People meet, tell stories, have drinks, munch on a light snacks while being mesmerized by the moving landscape and share moments. But alas, these cars are being de-commissioned by the score. The European rail operators divert much of their resources to their High Speed Train networks (HST, TGV, ICE. AVE etc). Let’s hope that this rugged and Spartan stainless steel buffet car survives when HST’s are introduced in Portugal. And that the fact that there was no catering on this service was no tell tale sign.
The picture is taken with a 16 mm wide angle lens. The elongated counter takes up a very dominant position. Behind this counter there are refrigerators, storage and cooking equipment.
PS-E2 tech: rotated, cropped, levels, saturated (master), fill flashed selected shadow parts, darkened the strong highlights, sharpened (the whole pic and parts with the sharpen brush) and
saved for the web.

Gelukkig is deze genomen zonder storende elementen, waardoor de foto zijn volle waarde krijgt, gepaste verlichting en volkomen normale kleuren. Niet makkelijk met de blinkende inox. Goed werk Bert.

A good documentary shot, Bert, again with a wise use of perspective and lines in your composition. In fact the feeling it gives is quite spacious, probably also due to the way in which the strong light falls into the vacant car through the windows on either side. Too bad it's almost a kind of retro shot already, but I guess that's the way the times go. Well done, and a fine note you wrote.

Oh, no catering, that's the worst thing that can happen on a long distance train, 'cause it's very nice, dining on a train.
Good light, nice perspective. The light that comes in into the window is very nice, it makes it all the more empty. The color of the frame goes on under the left and right window? Am I correct?

An interesting perspective, even if I would have personally preferred if a character has been behind the bank.
The textures are also very well shown.
And the note is really interesting, thank you Bert.

I like the way you make the car look spacious with lots of depth using perspective, the clarity is good.
The highspeed trains cuts journeys to such a short timing , at the most there's only an attendant with a trolley selling snacks and drinks (taking reference from japanese shinkansen ) I wonder why they don't at least covnert it to a Snack Counter or Cafe - I've seen ramen and sushi shops in japan that are smaller then this car LOL!
The train-travel age is gone :((
But the age of "train bentos" bought at stations might be coming to Europe eh?

Great note and perspective. The 16mm has come in useful for this confined shot. Out of points sorry

Nicely photographed. The surfaces are so clean, reflective and shiny yet old and neglected at once. I also like the feel of the tight space. It really has been captured in this photograph, I think. I can imagine it full of people and food, with lots of conversation going on. It's a ghostly image in this way. Nicely done.

Beautiful sharp picture of a deserted place. Nice capture of the light coming from outside. (Sorry, but I really don't like the color of the frame)
