This is the McDonald's restaurant in central Porto, located in a beautiful old art-nouveau cafe. Apart from the fact that a fastfood chain invades, or saves depending how you look at it, a classy cafe with lots of character, the name of the former restaurant struck me: 'Imperial' - and how the McDonald's sign was simply put in front of the old name and eagle sign. There's lots of symbolism in it, one modern new world empire taking over from old world empires, among them Portugal as former naval superpower, 'imperial McDonald's', etc. All clichιs of course, but a striking combination of icons stuck together.
