Vila Franca do Campo: Cliff diving capital of the world.

Both places are separated by a 14 km line that has the Fire Lake (Lagoa do Fogo) as its middle point.

The clifftops on the background offer not only the best climate mile of the Azores but also one of the mildest in the world.
The differences in precipitation, sunshine and wind to Praia de Monte Verde are greater than between any two Mediteranean beaches between 35Ί and 40Ί latitude.
Data, yearly averages: Temperature: 18.5Ί v 16.5Ί; precipitation: 700 v 1200 mm: sunshine: 2600 v 1950 hours; wind: 8 v 20 kph.
Alone this example shows how confused are people referring to "the climate" of the Azores.
Note: even these extreme differences between north shore and Riviera pale in comparison with the variation with elevation.
The north facing mountain slopes overlooking Lagoa do Fogo, at almost 1000 meters elevation, get more than 4,000 mm and are almost always coverd by fog in winter.
Which means: greater difference in precipitation to the photo's location than between any two beaches in continental Europe or the USA (in absolute values, in percent second only to San Diego v Olympic Peninsula's northwest corner).

The first and so far only lodging possibility at these clifftops exists only since 2015 and it's as large as ... one bed.

Incredibly and as of today one of the few days available for this year is July 9, the day that the World Series returned for the 5th consecutive year to what became the World's Cliff diving capital since it first hosted the competition in 2012.
