‘Elvas - Aqueduct with visual effects’
Being a border town (at 8 km from Spain) Elvas has often been the scene of battles but since 1229 it definitively belonged to Portugal.
In Elvas the water supply has always been important and in 1537 Juan III, king of Portugal, has decided to build an aqueduct.
The project became increasingly expensive and several times over many years the works were suspended due to lack of funds. In 1620 the water ran of the aqueduct near the town walls and finally in 1622 the project was completed.
The Aqueduto da Amoreira is classified as a national monument since 1910. The name refers to the place where the water came from.
Personally I think this is one of the most impressive constructions in Portugal. Its total length is 7 km. Some sources state 8,5 km. I haven’t measured it :) but It’s definitely worth to hike along for a few kilometers.
There are a total of 843 arcades and in the valley the aqueduct reaches a height of 31 meters.
Previously a lot of pictures of this aqueduct has already been posted on TE. However because of its length it’s still possible to present new views of it.
In addition to the imposing sight I found the aqueduct visually very striking, certainly with the sun falling in from one side.
If you have time, take also a look at the altered image # 1 in the workshop. As often also here I had doubt about which image I would choose as the main picture. And sometimes - according to your answers – I make the completely wrong choice :)
The information mentioned above and much more can be found on Wikipedia.

Bonjour Paul,

Bedankt.
Prettige zondag, met 7 graden in Oost-Vlaanderen,

Hello Paul,
I like the long, graphical shadows from the right and their repetition. Very good sharpness and well framed and composed. I might have blurred the blue sky. There appears to be some banding? The greenery at top left improves the color palette. The light shining through the back of the old Aqueduct is wonderful and enhances the repetition of the shadows. Tfs!

Hello Paul,
This is an outstanding shot! The lines created by the shadows create geometric patterns throughout the scene. The lighting is outstanding and the photo has fine sharpness and detail. The use of the aqueduct to lead the eye into the shot was well chosen.

Hello Paul,
Your note gives wonderful historical perspective to this package, but it is the artistic composition that is most important here. The light is excellent, filtering through the openings on the right. Inherent here is a lesson in two-point perspective, easy to see if you draw the lines with a straight-edge.
Warm regards,

Hi Paul.
Fabulous composition with a perfect POV, which shows very well the angle of 90 degrees, which provides the aqueduct, great effect through shadows and lights, their bows.
Very nice colorful, these natural shades.
Also, both sharpness, such as lighting, are perfect.
Good day and happy start to the week.
Best regards.
Luis.

Hello paul,
well chosen the POV as we can see the old Aqueduct alongside the scene. The falling light on it on the right, creates this beautiful optical effect, making the image even more effective.

Hello Paul,
You show us this time three remarkably elegant compositions, all of which could have done well as an official upload. Although lacking human life they all make a very vivid impression thanks to the richness of details and attractive patterns. This one makes me think of an architect's vision of a planned project. It is so well composed and uses the light so efficiently. Although slightly sterile it is still a fascinatingly varied view.
Kind regards,
Gert

Howdy Paul,
Interesting position to display the medieval Acueducto de Amoreira, starting in the foreground and continuing on into the distant background, unique Romanesque 4 levels, enhanced by shadows and light.
Well done,

Hello Paul,
I have to say, this is a feature that I would be drawn to, with my camera. It is a photographer's dream! I just love the repeating arches, nicely backlit, to promote their shapes. In the f/g the contrasting light and shadows resemble steps, acting as a very successful guide.
With regard to the various w/s, a very difficult choice. No wonder you had a dilemma! my only really useful observation is that the sky has a less 'banded' effect in your first w/s. The other shots both have their merits, in fact, the one with the tree in the f/g could have been posted in its own right, as it is so different in mood from the original.
Have a lovely day,
Bev :-)

Hello Paul,
what a magnificent structure, I like very much all the angles and compositions you are offering us. The play of shadows creates fascinating patterns that fill the frame. The comprehensive, elevated view in the workshop confirms that the photographic opprtunities this place offers are endless. I like the graphism and the colours as well as the clarity retained even in the distant background. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,

This is a really magnificent work of architecture and Elvas really deserves a long visit. I like your pov here and the shadows form a very nice graphism on the ground.

Dag dear Paul
The shadows of the Aqueduct pillars, horizontally across the frame has a superb visual effect and makes it appear like steps. The perspective has been well drawn with the Aqueduct, with fine interest being created by light coming through the arches.
Beatiful shot!
