Photographer's Note
Going over my archival photos from Lisbon, I had this jealous thought: how great it would be to live permanently in a photogenic place like Lisbon? I cannot really complain because I had a chance to live for a couple of years in places like Krakow, Munich, or Los Angeles. It was sadly in the pre-digital times, but they were places which offered endless photo opportunities. Unfortunately, many good jobs for scientists are in remote locations and most importantly now when I found one which is really good, I don’t want to spoil it by making another change.
You can see here the statue of King John I (Estαtua de Dom Joγo I) with the silhouette of the Castelo de S. Jorge on top of the hill in the distance. It was captured from the Praηa da Figueira.
I have seen a very similar picture in Ike’s gallery but since I took it at very different light conditions, I decided to share it anyway.

Hello Mariusz, a well considered composition, initially I read your title as ‘ The king of the castle’!
All the details are in sharp focus taken in a lovely light.
Excellent.
Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hello Mariusz,
I wonder, would photography become a bit of a bore if you photographed the same place every day. You would end up wishing to move further afield, to capture different scenes, exactly as you do in this country. Educating others about your neighbourhood and your country is as interesting as educating people about your holiday destinations.
I like the symbolic connections in your photograph, so very carefully inferred. There is the king on his horse, trotting triumphally towards the castle, on the hill. It's a fine composition of a well exposed photograph.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

mariusz
you got a nice angle with the king almost in movement. nice view of the imposing Sγo jorge castle and the flags of lisbon and portugal too. About photogenic places, I guess I can take many photos from my town daily, even today during the mass my mind was running despite I had no camera with me. some cities are monumental as saint petersburg, or rio, or buenos aires, even the not well known LIMA.. Anyway I guess you would hate LIMA, its sky is ever, ever, ever, grey.
take care
jorge

Hello Mariusz,
Isn't this one of the classic shots in Lisbon?
It is of course a beautiful composition with the equestrian statue looking towards the houses and the castle on the hill.
My hotel was not far from here in a street with many restaurants.
If you lived in a very photogenic place, I think you would also dream of going elsewhere. People still long to see new things.
Best regards, Paul

Hi Mariusz,
The light conditions were good on this day, resulting in a very good photo. I like the fact that we get a good view of both the statue and the castle on the hill in the background. Good colour and light control.

Hello Mariusz,
Hmm, the king has two stowaways, one on his hat and one on the neck of his horse. Nice connection between the statue and the fortress.
Regards,
MT
