Tough & rugged
After the Dutch subway station series it’s back to Portugal. This type of diesel locomotive and stainless steel carriage are the mainstay of CP’s (Caminhos de Ferro Portgueses, Portugal’s national train operator) West-Algarve fleet. It was taken on Lagos station.
While staying in Santa Luzia (near Tavira) in the Sotavento region we decided to make a daytrip by train to Lagos and Portimao. It was high tourist season. So it was a bit of a bad choice. Somewhat shocked by the garish, overheated tourist pandemonium we only stayed for 2 hours in Lagos and decided to head back. On Lagos station we waited for almost an hour for our train. While strolling around I noticed these two tough guys, getting ready for their next shift . Together with the concrete lamp post and the strong shadows, they formed a very strong image. It’s one of my favourite train pics.
PS-E2 tech: rotated 0.25 dgr CCW, cropped, saturated (master and red (tweaked the hue also) & blue), fill flashed selected shadow parts, darkened the shadow of the lamppost, cloned out a powerline (this is an exception, I generally like them ;-)) , sharpened (the whole pic and parts with the sharpen brush) and saved for the web.

Hi Bert, beautiful and strong, sharp picture of a loc. I like the vertical lines and the tracks. The crop is excellent, I like the way the carriage is positioned. Good title and good notes!

Mooie scherpe foto Bert, van treinen en locomotieven weet ik niet zoveel daarvoor moet ik bij mij zoon zijn. De kleuren zijn prachtige en zeer realitisch en het mooi stukje blauwe hemel. mooi.

Yes, it may be the end of the subway station series, Bert, but what I clearly see again is your eye for pleasing compositions with lines, diagonals and shapes. This time you found them in the engine and the wagon; fine shooting position to have the wagon start where the bright red engine ends. Good inclusion of the platform lights at the top left and behind to add some more perspective. Well done again.

Lots of interesting technical details to study. Yes I love trains too, they just have so much punch. I like how the strong colors enhances the precense of these big machines. The contrast between the grey waggon and the colorful engine is great too.

Very sharp and nicely photographed. Great lines and colors. It does convey a sense of strength but is also is very softened by the colors and lighting. It tones it down a bit but not too much. The concrete and steel still give a lot of strength. Very nicely seen and photographed.

The charming red locomotive is put in a fine natural frame of the wagon and light post, Bert. Very simple but successful composition of details and strong colours. Very well done!
