Photographer's Note

Auschwitz is a place that needs little introduction. The horrific events at this and other Nazi concentration camps could be said to define World War II. A visit here is an extremely sobering experience for all and no one could fail to be moved by the shocking stories it reveals.

At the camp the Nazis hoarded many personal effects taken from the prisoners. This picture shows a small part of an enormous pile of suitcases found when the Red Army liberated Auschwitz. Prisoners arrived from all over Europe with most believing that they were being sent to work in the east. In fact a large number of prisoners were killed very shortly after arrival. Many names can be seen on the cases giving the display a very poignant and personal touch.

This picture was taken indoors through glass without a flash or tripod. The sharpness and lack of reflection was achieved by holding the lens directly and firmly against the glass.
