Echo Beach
These beach huts are captured from the Boulevard of Katwijk Zee, a sea side resort and fishing community on the Dutch North Sea coast. The beach huts are operated by Katwijk family businesses and are except for the gull deserted ‘cause of the relatively late hour and the lousy summer we’re having in Holland.
Katwijk is one of the few remaining Dutch sea side resorts that retained much of its traditional character. So no rampant post-modern property development that marred places like Noordwijk and Scheveningen so badly.
In a WS is a view taken from the beach to the boulevard.
What is the background of the use of these kind of beach houses and the high density and almost mathematical order of their placement? Is it basic Dutch beach culture, has it to with the territorial drives of the locals and the Germans, the biggest group of foreign tourists in Katwijk. Or is religion maybe involved? Stay tuned for the next posting :-)
This is the start of a Katwijk and Noordwijk series. The villages where I grew up.
’Echo Beach’ was a delightful hit in the summer of 1980 and was performed by Martha and the Muffins. Released on Dindisc and a track of their also fab debut album ‘Metro Music’
PCS3 tech: altered the saturation, contrast, curves and levels for the whole pic and some elements separately, using different layers, enhanced the edges, USM-ed, added a frame and resized and did a gentle USM again.

You caught the poetry of limits and order on the place of emptiness and freedom: the beach and the see. Good work, Donatella

Hi Bert
A fascinating scene. The patterns of the huts and the lines of the waves entertain the eye. Strange they are so close to each other?

Hallo Bert,

John.

Hi Bert, this is part of Netherland I look forward to know, I mean all the coast... What surprise me a lot in this photo is why the huts are located showing the back to the water... To fight againts the wind maybe?
About the photo, I love the geometrical paterns. I cant wait for the next post and find out about it. Take care Bert.
Miguel
PS: Is the water very cold?

Hi Bert,
The symmetry here is amazing. At first glance the huts resemble bee hive boxes that are used extensively in N. America. I like the foreground smidge of grass and also the way the red coverings enhance the photo. A most unusual scene. First rate.

Hej Bert,
Was leuk vandaag!
Groeten,

Hi Bert,
Martha and the Muffins! It does ring a bell somewhere far, far away in the back of my head ;-). Love the pattern you got here. The colours are great and sharpness spot on! Very nice.
I really should start to take some pictures of the Netherlands once I'm back...
Have a good weekend!

Bonjour Bert,

Hi Bert,
This pattern works very well because of contrast of colours, and the rythm of the lines. It's a subject very interesting, understandable for me thanks to your accurate note! It's a pretty composition! Congrats!
Greetings,
Angel.

Hallo Bert,

Hello Bert,
very nice graphistic photo and at the some time a minimalistic one.Excellent composition with a sharp eye to can see these 'details'.The verticals and horizontals lines make your capture 'particular'.The colours is saturated and the light is so vivid too.Informative your note too.Congratulations.
Have a nice weekend,Danos

The beach huts provide excellent geometric patterns. They seem so carefully placed with a tape measure perhaps :)I love all the repeating colours. I looks forward to the explanation

Hi Bert,
this image is at least graphical and interesting. I like the perspective lines caused the placement of the beach houses and your point of view. The inclusion of the foreground plants and part of the ocean create a nice environment for the main subject. Great work!

Oh, I like this shot! Nice light of course, but most of all - the ordered arrangement of these beach huts with a lonely gull on one of them makes a perfect photo subject. As I live nearby, in Leiden, and have even lived in Katwijk for several months, this is a very familiar place for me, but I have never thought of making this kind of shot... Works really well!
Cheers

hello, bert! an interesting rhythmic capture with fascinating subject. definitely feels like "echo"... nice composition with the grass providing just the right amount of foreground intereset and DOF anchor. question: why are those beach huts facing away from the sea?
