Photographer's Note
The Afrikaanderwijk in Rotterdam, a working-class, multi-cultural neighbourhood with a lively Saturday market. Unfortunately many of the homes need refurbishing and while some are to undergo the process many are to be demolished, thus making space for new apartments that the present tenants will not be able to afford. At the moment, it is an neighbourhood in turmoil, which you can see in the street art and the protests of a few inhabitants that are fighting to stay.
I'll take you on a little tour.

The mural is beautiful but can't compensate for a low level of housing conditions. But it's a nicely timed composition of the two ladies passing by.

Hello Elaine,
This is a problem experienced in many countries; houses are sub-standard and are inhabited by a close-knit community, who would not be able to afford the new builds! There is no easy answer but the desires of the community should be high on the agenda.
The mural is beautiful. It makes a very interesting backcloth for these two determined ladies.

Dat is inderdaad wel de naam van een bekende wijk in Rotterdam. De muurschildering is erg aantrekkelijk met verschillende vogels tegen opvallende kleuren. De twee vrouwen zijn goed aan de rechterkant geplaatst.

Goedenavond Elaine,
Ik denk dat alle steden in Europa een beetje dezelfde situatie kennen.
Soms weet men niet in welk werelddeel men zich bevindt.
Gent heeft het zelfde probleem met de oude huizen die bewoont worden door mensen uit andere landen.
De schildererijen zijn hier wel heel mooi aangebracht
Prachtig met die vogels, mooi foto werk, bedankt.

Hi Elaine,interesting note about this quarter of Rotterdam that try to change but not for all, old houses and new expensive apartments are a dangerous mix, especially considering the kind of people that lives there, a nice scene with the muslim women walking close to this big murales. Very colorful street, so nicely painted walls.
Great place for a photographer. I suppose the ladies are curious why are you photographing them, if only they knew that their photo with trek Earth!
I think it would be much more difficult for me to take photos of ladies on the street, especially it is not acceptable in some cultures so I would get in trouble probably there...
