Photographer's Note
Good Morning Everyone,
In 2019, my husband and I were part of a small TE Get-together in the Netherlands with Viviane, her husband Chris, Christine (CMJC) and Will (willperrett).
We stayed in a beautiful region called Otterlo, and were able to walk in the woodlands there.
In the woods, we saw some amazing toadstools, some with red caps like you might see in children's story books (posted here).
I will post other examples as workshops, to give you an impression of the eclectic mix.
I wish you a safe and enjoyable day, Bev :-)

Hello Bev,
A superb macro shot of the red capped toadstool. Probably poisonous though. The shallow dof works well here. Tfs!

Hello Bev, Beautiful picture of Amanita muscaria, or fly agaric. Nice composition, indeed like from a fairy tale book. These beautiful mushrooms are very common in Polish forests. I love the views of them.
For me, the strange is the title. What are toadstools?
As I found, toadstool is an unscientific label that is sometimes applied to certain types of mushrooms. It usually refers to colorful and poisonous or inedible mushrooms. There is no biological distinction between a toadstool and mushroom that scientists make. In Polish, we have no similar distinction. If the mushroom is edible or poisonous, has nothing to do with colours.
In Workshop, there is another Amanita muscaria, but older. They become flat. They are poisonous. They are noted for their hallucinogenic properties. A local variety of the mushroom was used as an intoxicant and entheogen by the indigenous peoples of Siberia and by the Sαmi
The other one is not huge. Probably it is Paxillus involutus, commonly known as the brown roll-rim. It was eaten, but now it is proved to be poisonous.

Hello Bev,
It is sometimes said that the Vikings ate this kind of mushroom because its poison made them brave enough to go berserk when attacking a place. It is probably just a myth, but at least it's not deadly if eaten in small quantities. But I wouldn't try anyway. What I do know is that you will probably receive the non-existent award for most colourful photo of the day. It looks so good, even if it wouldn't taste so well.
Thank you for your comments earlier. I probably got used to the salespersons in Mahabalipuram after a while, since I didn't mention them again in my diary. Or the town was so small that they quickly learned I was hopeless.
Kind regards,
Gert

Is this real, Beverley? it looks as a very attractive mushroom, but surely not eatable, IMHO.
Stunning red color, amazing beauty one would not expect in nature.
Good afternoon,

Hi Bev,
The color of the mushroom is eyecatching. The point of view is showing the details of the mushroom. The light is giving good colors rendering. Have a nice day.

Hello Beverley, Fly Agaric, their distinctive red and white caps stand out from the fallen leaves. We used to see them in woodland with lots of silver birch.
I remember as a child, these were the fungi that were always pictured in story books, just as your title suggests. And at that time I had never seen them for real!
This is a particularly fine example.
Excellent sharp close up.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hi Bev,
beautiful photo or actually series of photos. The mushrooms seem so colorful. The main one certainly not edible but nevertheless so very colorful. Great work here.
But even more jealous I am of the TE meeting which you mentioned. I am sadly not able to decide about my free time myself anymore and that translates into tough decisions sometimes.
Very well done,
M

Hello Beverley,
A great photo of this Dutch toadstool (the word for it in Dutch [paddenstoel] is an exact translation of the English word by the way). The red cap with white dots is really beautiful and captured it very well and clearly among the autumn leaves.

Hi Bev
We have an identical looking toadstools around here too but it is questionable whether they are the same variety is in Europe.
An excellent macro of it and a good WS one too.

Dear Beverley,
As a wise-man said to me once: 'Every mushroom is edible once' :) Joking apart its a nice piece from your archives just before the whole COVID nightmare started.
Best Wishes,
Gy.

Hello Beverley,
Excellent clear and sharp macro shots of the toadstools in vivid colour.
I don't find them in the area where I live.
But the one in your main photo looks exactly like in the fairytale stories in which the gnome houses are.
Best regards, Paul

Hi Bev.
Sensational this selection of mushrooms, but without a doubt the one that attracts all our attention is the one you have put as the main one, it is so perfect that it could look like an ornament in a garden, but we see its natural country environment, its red color is beautiful, but it is that these types of mushrooms are highly poisonous
An images to enjoy, with its beautifuls coloring, great luminosity and perfect sharpness.
Superbly captured. I love.
Happy start to the week.
Very best regards.
Luis.
