Sails, Masts and Flags

Every five years, Amsterdam hosts a large maritime event, called SAIL Amsterdam, which is visited by tall ships from all over the world. The last edition took place in August 2015 and that is when this photo was taken. Seen here are the sails and masts of the Alexander von Humboldt II (Germany), the Santa Maria Manuela (Portugal) and the Esmeralda (Chile).

Hi Lars,
That is quite a forest of masts and ropes! Use of tele is very effisient here. Good to see those green sails and red flags adding colour.

Hello Lars,
I like this composition where we don't actually see the ships but instead the dense forest of masts and sails. It's a graphically attractive photo with lots of details and lots of colours. I always like that unexpected angle to a photo.

A veritable forest of masts and rigging. The oblique point of view and choice of the telephoto lens help create a superb graphical composition. The flags add some nice splashes of colour.

On occasion these ships visit Dublin too, and even though I always visit, I find it really hard to make good photos of them, so your photo is a lesson to me! Your shot is wonderfully busy with many strong vertical lines and great colours. Really nicely seen to make this unique photo

Hi Lars,

A good study of repetition of patterns and shapes. Wishing now I had gone to the old Batavia Harbour in Jakarta which has similar scenes. I like the splashes of extra color added by the red and blue flags and the folded green sails. Tfs!

Greetings Lars,

While your recent work has been US-based, I like to go back through the works from a photographers home country. This is quite a special shot - with a significant level of complexity emerging from some straight lines. It is nice the way the shot develops from bottom to top, with decreasing complexity and increasing open space. The fact that the main masts are close to, but not quite parallel, also introduces some interesting triangles in to the composition.
