Photographer's Note
Tear the roof off the sucker
The giant ‘Luminator’ kinetic sculpture of Jean Tinguely seems to have so much unleashed power in it that it could easily tear thru the lightweight roof of the KunstHal Rotterdam museum if it wants to leave. But there’s no need. The roof of the building was actually temporary removed to get the most bulky items of the Tinguely exhibition in. And this will be done again when the sculpture returns to the Jean Tinguely Museum in Basle. During the design phase of the KunstHal, it was prepared for this kind of operation and with this architect Rem Koolhaas from OMA took his deconstructionist design practises again a step further ;-)
A picture of the “Mιta Harmonie IV” industrial music machine s in the WS and a video clip of it is: here
There’s no shortage of available words when you want to describe the facinating work of Jean Tinguely. Amongst much other things it’s pretty funky.
‘Tear the roof off the sucker (give up the funk)” was a single from Parliament, from their Mothership Connection album. Released in 1976 on Casablanca
A Treklens pic with the same title, shot in Paradiso Amsterdam, is here
The process: For a graphism-lover like me, entering the exhibition felt like coming to an exciting party. But it actually wasn't easy to make photographic sense of the whole gestalt … certainly with the limitted focal range of my trusted little Fuji. A little tilt saved the day here.
The PCS3 tech: altered the saturation, contrast, curves and levels for the whole pic and some elements separately, using different layers, enhanced the edges, USM-ed, added a frame and resized and did a gentle USM again.

Hallo Bert,

Mooi werk!
Groeten,
Lars

Hi Bert,
That is a very interesting contraption! I just went to the Dutch Design week here in Eindhoven. Quite often, the artist's view and explanation of the work did not entirely match up with the actually piece of art. I'm now wondering what the actual idea was behind the contraption that you show us here!
Thanks for sharing!
Greetings,
Dennis

Hi Bert,
The contraption is so monstrously incongruous with the surroundings that it reminds me of a beached whale. The graphism is great, especially with the main portions of the device seen against the ceiling of windows. And yes, the tilt is apropos and gave you the extra room. Well captured.

Hi Bert,

The tilt is not that noticable and I think you could have got away with more so that the structure had a bit more room to "breathe". It's not exactly my cup of tea but I can see the fascination of such a monstrosity. I'm amazed how much light must be in the building as you managed 1/80 sec on only ISO 100. Good work

Hi Bert,
A fantastic art shot. I love your POV and your presentation of the sculpture. A really well composed picture with excellent sharpness even though you could see that the lighting conditions were not the best. Have a fine week end!
Cheers,
Ulf
P.S. There are scultures by Jean Tinguely and Niki de Saint Phalle outside the Moderna Museet in Stockholm. It would nice to post a picture of those some day.
