Photographer's Note
Seven gigantic butterflies have landed on the surface of the canal. The butterflies not only rise and fall with the movement of the water caused by passing boats, but their wings glow blue against the dark night. At first sight, the artwork seems to portray a peaceful, almost magical scene. But with his artwork Butterfly Effect, Masamichi Shimada attempts to portray how something as delicate as a butterfly can possess such immense power.
The title of the artwork refers to American scientist and meteorologist Edward Lorenz’s (1917-2008) 1961 lecture titled, ‘Predictability, does the Flap of a Butterfly’s Wings in Brazil Set Off a Tornado in Texas?’. Lorenz researched how a seemingly insignificant action, such as a butterfly flapping its wings, can activate a chain of events that can result in much bigger changes, such as the emergence of a destructive tornado in Texas. Lorenz’s butterfly effect is a metaphor; although not scientifically possible, it demonstrates how daily life, the weather, or the stock exchange have a certain degree of unpredictability, and that chaos or crisis is always just around the corner.

Hallo Gerrit,
Deze zilverblauwe vlinders op het kalme water van de gracht zijn een heel mooi gezicht. De spiegelingen zijn ook heel aantrekkelijk, net als het contrast met de warme tinten van de ramen op de achtergrond.

Magnificent nigfht scene over the water, Gerrit.
The blue illuminated butterflies and their reflections contrast with the golden illuminated windows on the background.
Beautiful outcome, cheers,

Hello Gerrit,
Another very nice installation, which benefits from the reflections in the canal. It's well exposed and the yellow lights from the windows are fine complements. The note about unpredictability makes me wonder if Trump can cause a major crisis in a distant part of the world by being in a bad mood early one morning.

Gert

Hello Gerrit, a lovely installation; is this for a short period of time?
Night-time is obviously the best time to enjoy the artwork. The yellow lights from the background building offer a good contrast with the blue, as well as their straight lines that contrast with the curved lines of the butterflies.
The reflections are beautiful too.
I enjoyed reading your note.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hi Gerrit.
The water effects in the evening gives amazing results in connection with the artificial decorations illuminating the surface. The blue butterflies superbly match the yellow light coming from the windows of the building. TFS !!!

Hello Gerrit,
I always enjoy seeing colorful illuminations at night. You captured these artistic butterflies perfectly; I like the reflections, too. Let's hope the new year won't hold too much chaos, but we're living in a crazy world, so anything can happen!

Hello Gerrit, beautiful big butterflies. They are similar to the inflatable figures in Dubai Glow Park. Wonderful night picture and so fresh :).

j'aime beaucoup ces papillons bleu et leur effet est me semble-t-il apaisant.
je me suis autorisι une WS en recadrant plus serrι, sans une partie des fenκtres au loin, il me semble que cela mets plus en valeur les papillons.

Hi Gerrit,
Blue light looks just great on these delicate butterfly wings. Truly magical looking artwork. And your exposure is perfect. Is that a house boat in the background?
