Photographer's Note
This is a detail of the romanic ambon of the portal of San Giovanni di Lucoli, a medieval church in L'Aquila, that was very important in XIII-XIV Centuries.
The original church is destroyed in 1898 for the costruction of a modern street (via XX Settembre) so the portal is re-used on a little church some meters above (actually S. Francesco di Paola). This is a typical example of a perverse sense of restoring in early Nineteenth Century...!
XI A.D. - XII A.D. ROMANIC ART
The formation and growth of many little States means a certain amount of separate growth in the arts as well. In the South there is fusion between Arab, Byzantine and Norman art. In Venice and in Sicily, Byzantine mosaics are still widely used. Paintings are also very much in Byzantine style. Romanic art is defined by its simple and linear style and the solidity of its form and shapes. Sculpture is mostly associated with architecture as stylized human forms or decorative statues are an integral part of buildings and churches. Church or Cathedral doors are also decorated with bronze saints or prophets. Miniature and jewellery also have a religious theme. Romanic art spreads throughout the Peninsula, although it is everywhere influenced by the local taste and reality.

Hi Chiara,Well picked out detail of the stone work, unusual carving of the stone into twists ,it reminds me of fabric or wool, such a good contrast to the angular stone work. Thanks Tom.
