IL MAUSOLEO
Il monumento piω conservato tra i resti del complesso dei Gordiani θ un ampio mausoleo circolare che risale all’epoca costantiniana. E’ un edificio a pianta circolare, in opera laterizia, a due piani di cui il sotterraneo, a forma di corridoio, con nicchie curvilinee alternate a rettilinee, θ disposto ad anello intorno ad un robusto pilone centrale. Coperto da una volta a botte ed illuminato tramite finestre a feritoia, il locale era adibito alla deposizione dei defunti. Il piano superiore, destinato alle cerimonie funebri, ha uguale alternanza di nicchie ed θ ricoperto da volta a cupola con grandi occhi circolari per l’illuminazione. Sulla superficie esterna del muro che si alza oltre la spinta della volta, sono ancora visibili cornici e fasce decorative in mattoni, e mensole in marmo. L’edificio era preceduto da un portico colonnato con ampia gradinata frontale su modello del Pantheon. L’intera costruzione ripete quella del Mausoleo di Romolo, figlio dell’imperatore Massenzio, edificato, nella stessa epoca, sulla via Appia.
Il Mausoleo del complesso dei Gordiani, sembra, perς, non aver alcun collegamento strutturale e funzionale con la villa dei Gordiani, nι si conosce a chi fosse dedicato.
