Il grande geografo Strabone, vissuto in etΰ augustea, afferma che il fiume Aniene diventa navigabile in una zona pianeggiante non lontana dalla Villa dell'imperatore Adriano chiamata dal ponte omonimo PONTE LUCANO. Il nome deriva dal diumviro M.Plauzio Lucano che nei primi anni dell'impero ne avrebbe curato la realizzazione insieme al suo collega Tiberio Claudio Nerone, futuro imperatore. Anticamente il ponte doveva essere stato progettato e realizzato a cinque arcate, non tutte visibili; quando scoppiς la guerra tra l'impero romano, che aveva inviato un esercito bizantino guidato da Narsete, e Totila, re dei Goti (541-552), costui per ritardare l'avanzata nemica tagliς la prima arcata.

Non lontano da qui era stato realizzato un porto in cui erano ancorati barconi che poi ripartivano per la vicinissima Urbe dopo essere stati caricati con i legnami dei boschi tiburtini e soprattutto con la ricercata pietra locale, il lapis tiburtinus vale a dire il travertino che veniva utilizzato per l'abbellimento di molti edifici pubblici tra cui il Colosseo tanto per citarne uno. Presso di esso, nel 1155 l'Imperatore Federico I, detto Barbarossa, incontrς il Papa Adriano IV.
In questa occasione i tiburtini gli offrirono le chiavi della cittΰ sottomettendosi al suo potere. Come ringraziamento per tanta devozione l'imperatore concesse alla cittΰ il privilegio di fregiare il suo stemma dell'Aquila imperiale. Vicino a questo ponte e a questo porto d'importanza eccezionale la gens PLAUTIA costruμ un mausoleo che sotto alcuni aspetti ricorda quello situato sull'Appia e dedicato a Cecilia Metella. La tomba dei Plauzi, che si eleva sulla sinistra del fiume Aniene, θ situata su un territorio che apparteneva a questa gens; fu attribuita a M.Plauzio Silvano amico di Cesare Augusto e console nel 2 d.C. La struttura θ circolare, esteriormente ricoperta da blocchi di travertino; all'interno c'θ un corridoio ad anello che gira intorno ad un ambiente a croce. L'edificio fu realizzato quasi sicuramente durante il I sec d. C. proprio dal menzionato M.Plauzio Silvano il cui nome θ menzionato nella cornice mediana della parte cilindrica, primo defunto a trovarvi posto degno di ogni onore per essersi distinto nell'Illirio. In seguito davanti al mausoleo fu realizzato un avancorpo di forma rettangolare per poter scrivere i nominativi con relativi elogi delle persone della gens plautia man mano defunta; tra tali iscrizioni spicca quella del figlio di Marco: Tiberio Plauzio Silvano Eliano, famoso generale, console nel 45 d.C., proconsole d'Asia nel 56 d.C. e, saltando altri incarichi ricoperti, console di nuovo nel 74. Le iscrizioni sono su lapidi di marmo e sono separate da quattro semicolonne ioniche.

Θ andata perduta invece l'iscrizione dedicata a Publio Plauzio Silvano. Il fastigio della superba mole era forse decorato da una serie di ante fisse e la sommitΰ era ricoperta da una volta sferica; intorno era circondata da un alto recinto di forma quadrata (di cui resta solo il lato prospiciente alla strada), con colonne e nicchie per contenere le statue dei personaggi della famiglia Plauzia che vi erano sepolti.
Con il passar del tempo il mausoleo decadde e cambiς destinazione infatti nel corso del medioevo fu utilizzato come torre di difesa per la sua posizione strategica; anche esteriormente il suo aspetto mutς infatti nel 1465 per volontΰ del papa Paolo II per meglio essere un posto di avvistamento, di controllo e di guardia sulla sua sommitΰ fu posta una merlatura tipicamente medievale. Su uno dei merli della mole θ conservato uno stemma di Paolo II a ricordo dei lavori fatti eseguire.
