Photographer's Note
Settlement of Cagnemora - Bomarzo (VT)
The Cagnemora valley is accessible from the Bomarzo cemetery or from the Piano Via Cupa locality; this whole area between Cagnemora, Tacchiolo and Santa Cecilia is dotted with a significant presence of Etruscan-Roman altars, some tombs, pestarςle, fountains and structures still to be interpreted and dated: therefore, a capillary long-lasting secondary road network must be imagined he had to make these monuments accessible, and of which a partially legible trace remains. Going down a little you can see a huge erratic boulder detached in an indefinite period, but certainly very ancient, from the rocky ridge above and run aground on the rugged slope falling downstream.
On this boulder, looking from the valley, you can see a sort of front four battlements on the first two two rectangular hollows have been made.
On the front of the boulder, a large and deep rectangular niche, dug vertically, has a sort of mini displuviated ceiling, furrowed by an equally tiny columen just sketched, recalls other rock emergencies surveyed in the area: it could be a funeral shrine, a room for the deposit of cinerary urns.
Perhaps originally it had a bas-relief decoration, an upper pediment and side moldings, of which it seems we can still glimpse the faint imprint imprinted on the rock.
On the top of the boulder the flat rocky surface is dotted with a series of cavities, holes, holes, carvings whose function is not easy to understand; the most marked is a sort of rectangular basin with the upper edges profiled and sculpted to form a curb.
The tank is flanked by a similar building at a slightly lower level.
Holes of various sizes can be seen on the upper external profile and on the internal dividing wall of the two cavities, perhaps the former were used to insert vertical poles as supports for canopies in branches, reeds and foliage to shelter from the sun; the latter, on the other hand, allowed the passage of water from one tank to another or perhaps housed posts placed horizontally to favor the stretch of leathers or fabrics subjected to tanning, dyeing or washing.
The entire structure could perhaps be a kind of tannery or even a place used for the beating, maceration and processing of vegetable fibers such as hemp.
A funerary function of the rock monument is also probable.

Ciao Silvio
Fascinating place. Discovering it must have been real joy. I like the photo with lots of green colour, the man's T-shirt is a good contrast.
Best wishes

Hello Silvio,
It is fascinating to watch these very old and partly overgrown structures, whose exact functions are not known. The photo is well cropped and well exposed, and the inclusion of the man makes it even more attractive. He adds some colours and indicates the dimensions.
Best regards,
Gert

La prιsence de la personne a un effet d'ιchelle de grandeur. La prise de vue permet de voir les dιtails des ruines de la communautι de Cagnemora. La lumiθre met en valeur les couleurs de l'image. Bonne journιe.

Hello Silvio,
A very nice view of this old building, which slowly is being reclaimed by nature. The green bits overgrowing the old walls make a nice pattern, just as the trees in the background.

Hi Silvio,
Quite strange looking ancient ruins on top of this huge boulder. That man helps to get better idea of the scale. I like all the shades of green there.

Hello Silvio,
What an exciting place to explore!
Your photograph clearly reveals how this ancient fortification has slowly been reclaimed by Nature, but offers so much to the explorer.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)
