Photographer's Note
Hypogeum of the Volumni
It is accessed via a steep staircase between two walls cut into the Perugian tile (conglomerate of river deposits): on the right travertine jamb runs the foundation inscription "Arnth and Larth Velimna, sons of Arznea had this tomb built". The tomb belonging to the rich Velimna-lblumni family, reproduces the canonical plan of a Roman house and its architectural structure, divided into ten rooms. Dug out of the natural ground, it has access from a long staircase, arranged in the modern age. The door is made up of architrave, jambs and closing slab in travertine: on the right jamb the vertical inscription in Etruscan runs on three lines, relating to the construction of the tomb. Beyond the door there is a rectangular atrium with the ceiling imitating the double sloping wooden roof, with a central columen and orthogonal beams, onto which two rooms, cubicle, on each side open up; in the background the lablμnum, and two aloes ending in two rooms, with ceilings decorated with geometric coffers with Gorgonic, demonic and human protomes. The Velimna had probably dug their enormous sepulcher (10 rooms) with the idea that it could serve many generations: in reality only a few members - due to historical circumstances still subject to controversial studies - have found rest there, all in the largest cell, the tablinium. On the left, the urn of her daughter Velia Velimna, seated on a throne. Next to this, the marble urn by Publio Volumnio, already Roman in the 1st century AD. with naturalistic depictions of a paradise garden and with the Latin inscription that gave the name Volumni to the Hypogeum.

Hello Silvio,
An interesting room full of fine details on the nearest wall and of course even more in the inner room. The white sculptures look exciting. I would have expected a place like this to be very dark, but you have handled the limited light excellently and taken a sharp and clear photo.
Best regards,
Gert

Hello Silvio,
A great photo of dark room. The white sculpture stand out clearly and are nicely framed by the doorway. Also the details over the opening are clearly visible.

Hi Silvio,
Les objets attirent le regard. La prise de vue permet de voir les dιtails de l'intιrieur de la maison romaine. La faible luminositι ne nuit pas au rendu des couleurs. Bonne soirιe.

Ciao Silvio,
It is really impressive how many chapels and all sort of passages and structures have been built over there over centuries. Your country has an incredibly rich history. Great docummentary photo here. The white stone statues attract the attention in the centre.
Very well done,
M

Ciao Caro Silvio,
Your photograph creates the right character for a deep, underground mausoleum. The rough textures of the walls contrast hugely with the fine, white sculptures in the smaller room.
You have handled the light particularly well.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Silvio
A fine indoor shot with nice depth and height, and the minimal colour really works best where focus of attention is directed to the brightly lit area. This carries weight of this shot and lends the impact, and seamlessly exposed. Excellent

Hello Silvio,
A little intimidating place, but elegant for a burial place. Good light management.
