Badlands - Civita di Bagnoregio (VT)
The landscape of Civita di Bagnoregio is characterized by the typical shapes of the gullies resulting from the erosion of the clayey base layer of more ancient marine origin.
Badlands are an erosive form characterized by small steeply sloping valleys, devoid of vegetation, separated from each other by thin ridges: the steepness and impermeability of the clayey slope reduce the infiltration of water into the ground and favor its fast flow surface in rivulets, with the consequent removal of the altered superficial part of the clayey deposits and the incision of a dense drainage network.
The presence in significant quantities of a silty-sandy skeleton makes the clays more stable on steep slopes, and therefore favors the development and duration of the gullies over time.
The most impressive formation, nicknamed the Cathedral, stands out with its bold clay spiers among the white gullies of Bagnoregio: one of the most extraordinary landscapes in Italy, now a candidate for "World Heritage Site".

We really do get a sense of the height of this f/g cliff, as it towers above the white, eroded slopes which surround it.
The slopes appear to have been combed, with some giant comb, to create these deep scars and ridges.

Hello Silvio,
The Badlands looks like a fantastic landscape to me. Rugged and beautiful. But very hard to move around in, I think.
You did find a magnificent viewpoint.
Nice variety of parts in full sunlight and others in the shade.
The dark cliffs in the foreground stand out in the entire scenery.

Hi Silvio,
A good closeup in addition to the wider landscape on the earlier one. Again shadows give a clear view of land forms. And the Cathedral certainly deserves it's name. Darker stones dominate like in real old churches.

Hello Silvio, a very special landscape that is as you describe extraordinary. Very worthy of being a World Heritage Site.
I like the tight framing excluding the sky so that we can feast our eyes on the geographical features.
It is almost abstract with the lines, shapes and textures.
