Fountain in Piazza della Libertΰ
The fountain is leaning against the wall of what was once the facade of the stables of the Ancaiani palace, demolished in 1954 to allow the systematic excavation of the Roman Theater. The faηade was left standing to form a kind of terrace overlooking the theater and the Monastery of Sant’Agata. It is placed in the center of a semicircular aedicule surmounted by a half spherical shell-shaped cap; the water gushes continuously from the mouth of a sort of satyr carved in stone; the small collection tank is in the shape of a goblet. The height is too high to be used easily, probably it was used for watering the horses. It is probably contemporary with the palace, which dates back to the second half of the 17th century.
