Church of San Filippo Neri - Spoleto
The church, dedicated to the Florentine San Filippo Neri (1515 - 1595), was built starting in 1640 (a few years after the saint's death and his canonization, which took place in 1622) and completed in 1671, with the imposing dome.
The project is by Loreto Scelli from Spoleto, the work was possible thanks to the contribution of two illustrious and wealthy Spoleto residents in Rome: Ugo Alberici and Loreto Vittori.
Once the church was completed, the construction of the Filipino convent began (in 1674). This was later suppressed with the unification of Italy in 1860. Its premises were first used as the seat of the Liceo Regio until 1863 and then from 1871 as the seat of the Court, which is still there today.
The church is reached via a small staircase that bridges the difference in height with Piazza Mentana.
The faηade is in travertine, it contains a beautiful tympanum and openings marked by pilasters. The interior has three naves, divided by pillars with a transept covered by a dome. We find "Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple", "Crucifixion" by Gaetano Lapis, "Holy Family" by Sebastiano Conca, "St. Francis de Sales tramples heresy" by Francesco Refini, "Descent of the Holy Spirit" by Lazzaro Baldi.
The monumental high altar is from the 19th century.
In the sacristy there was a marble bust of San Filippo Neri by the sculptor Alessandro Algardi (1650), now in the diocesan museum.
On April 24, 1988, Pope John Paul II proclaimed Don Pietro Bonilli, founder of the Sisters of the Holy Family, blessed. His body was then exhibited for a week in the Cathedral and then placed in a golden urn in San Filippo.
Today the Blessed Don Pietro Bonilli has been brought back to his native Cannaiola.
