Alpe Gera - Lanzada - Valmalenco - Sondrio
The Alpe Gera dam, located in the municipality of Lanzada in Valmalenco, was built between 1961 and 1964. It allowed the formation of the artificial basin of the same name at an altitude of 2128 meters with a maximum reservoir of 68 million cubic meters, equal to the capacity of 63,000 Olympic swimming pools. The barrier, consisting of a massive concrete gravity dam, is 530 meters long and 174 meters high, like a 58-storey skyscraper, with a total volume of 1,700,000 cubic meters, sufficient to contain the Milan Cathedral.
It is the highest dam in Italy, among those in operation, the second ever.
The plain of Alpe Gera is an ancient glacial valley covered in large part by gravelly alluviums on a serpentine rock foundation. The sides of the tank are also made of serpentine rock which allows a good seal of the tank. The barrier section corresponds to the rocky threshold downstream of the aforementioned basin. it consists of a wavy ridge that crosses the valley and has considerable asymmetry, the right bank is considerably more steep than the left, the rock is made up of serpentine shales in view on both sides, while the valley bottom is covered by an alluvial layer and detrital.

The same lake from a lower angle. The colours are still fascinating and the reflections of the surrounding mountains and areas of snow are even better this time. It's a beautiful view and seems like a very tranquil and refreshing area. It is also a technically excellent photo.

Beautiful alpine scenery. Years ago before I saw the colors of water bodies for myself I would not have believed in their color as shown in photos. Now I know why :). Good detailed notes about the geography.

Silvio, this part of the artificial lake is encircled by slopes where rare trees grow. Only herbaceous plants and rocks are found around the lake. I see some permanent snow not melted in summer in the bg. Wonderful natural spot. Fine colors, good sharpness, regards.
