Arch of Trajan in Benevento
The Arch of Trajan is a monument of rare beauty that leaves you stunned not only for its majesty but also because of its excellent state of conservation. The arch looks like one of the best preserved in all of Italy. Its construction was started in 114 AD. to celebrate the opening of via Traiana, an alternative route to via Appia, which served to connect Benevento to Brindisi faster.
The arch has only one arch and is composed of two main facades, one facing the city, where peace scenes are depicted, and the other facing the outside, where military scenes are depicted. On the internal sides of the archway the depictions concern some scenes related to the activity of the emperor Trajan in Benevento. The arch is 15.60 meters high and 8.60 wide, in the center there is a dedicatory inscription towards Cesare. The framework of the structure consists of limestone blocks with a Parian marble coating. Above the archway there is an entablature with a frieze that immortalizes Trajan's procession on Dacia.
