Sassi di Matera
The Sassi of Matera constitute the historical center of the city of Matera, European capital of culture for 2019. The Sasso "Caveoso" and the Sasso "Barisano", together with the "Civita" district, form a complex urban core.
The Sassi of Matera were inscribed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1993. They were the first written site in southern Italy. The inscription was motivated by the fact that they represent an extraordinary urban ecosystem, capable of perpetuating from the most distant prehistoric past the ways of living in caves up to modernity. The Sassi of Matera are an exceptional example of accurate use of nature's resources over time: water, soil and energy. The dense living space and the layered layout are clearly visible, the street on the upper floor acts as a roof on the lower level, there is not a centimeter of waste, the material excavated to enlarge the interior is used to grow the exterior, there is not a gram of waste, truly ecological architecture that should make us learn also for the future.

Ciao Silvio, The portrait frame works wonders here, allowing the eye to rise thru the architectural and urbanistic wonder Matera is. Very well done! Ciao, Bert.

Hello Silvio,
I really like the clear light on the houses of the town and the white church tower on top of the hill. The bright blue sky makes a wonderful backdrop as well. Good sharpness and clarity.

Hello Silvio,
It's a magnificent view of this unique city and the vertical shape of the photo is perfectly chosen. Although the streets and buildings seem to be going in all directions without any clear pattern, the photo nevertheless has a diagonal accent from the church tower down to the lower left corner. The fine light and contrasts also make the photo very enjoyable.
Best regards,
Gert

Ciao Silvio,la vista θ mozzafiato ma la foto θ un po' strana,i dettagli non sono eccellenti ed i colori ricordano molto le vecchie cartoline che venivano colorate partendo da uno scatto in bianco e nero. Buona giornata,Luciano

A good view from the close range houses and up the hill to the prominent church tower, Silvio.
Signs of life appear between the decayed houses, like pot-plants in green and some cars on the narrow streets - but over all seems as people wee in siesta.
Arrivederci,
Ike

Hello Silvio,
Thanks for another fine view of this Phoenix like town that has risen from being a slum in the 1950's to a vibrant & fascinating tourist town in the 21st century.

Hi Silvio,
The upward point of view is creating depth. It is also showing the details of the buildings and of the church. The light is bringing out the colours. Have a nice day.

Silvio, the grey color of the old houses goes well with the blue sky. Matera is an open air museum where time seems to have stopped. The church tower dominates the city landscape. Fine colors, good sharpness, instructive photo note, regards.

Hello Silvio
As I work my way from the bottom, I see nothing but an aged gothic feel. A well placed POV on this one. I like it.

Hi Silvio
A quite astonishing shot I can only admire of a very unique location in such compact dwelling! this makes me wonder how the residents of those houses go in-and-out in such a seemingly very tight place. And all in identical colours, and thks for sharing this extraordinary WHS sight. Congrats.
Kind regards

Hello Silvio, what an amazing sight!
The haphazard arrangement of the buildings with their various shapes, as well as the many types of windows all add up to a unique place.
An excellent shot, bravo!
Kind regards, Jean.

Hi Silvio.
Spectacular composition of this city, with the houses tight, that climb like a pyramid on the side of the mountain and on the same top, the church as challenging everything, I see that there are many houses that seem empty and also half in ruins.
A good management, both of the luminosity, as of the sharpness.
Very well done. I like.
Enjoy the weekend.
My best wishes for you, my friend.

Hi Silvio
the photo opportunities here seem to be endless, so many compositions to be made. this is another fine one, perhaps the sharpness isn't the best or that could simply be the TE website - most likely. what a maze, so much history here, funny to see modern cars parked here too. excellent shot despite the back lighting. cheers

Ciao Silvio,
amazing point of view which allowed you to well take the great labyrinth of streets and houses. It feels as if we were transformed to some ancient times.
Great composition with the tower well placed in the frame. The tower adds a great point to focus on.
Excellent capture,
M

Ciao Caro Silvio,
What an amazing overview of this ancient part of Matera!
the buildings are closely huddled and seem to cover every centimetre of space, up this steep slope!
Your exposure is perfectly sharp and I like how you g=have been able to create a natural diagonal link between the angled building (bottom l/h corner) and the tall, church tower in the opposing corner.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)
