Photographer's Note

The set of three old pictures. I hope that you will find at least my adventure interesting.

In 1977 my husband had a conference in Erice, on Sicily, and I decided to go there too. It was not easy to get a passport and visa but somehow I manage to organize it. I have read that there are interesting small islands on the west of Sicily, so why no to go there? First I went to Trapani (upper picture). From Trapani, there were boats to Levanzo Island. There is a nice small village there, Cala Dogana, but for my adventurous nature it was not enough. I have heard that there were Paleolithic etchings from 10,000 years ago and Neo-Enolithic paintings from 5,000 years ago. I wanted to see them. The first problem was they were on the other side of the island. The second, the key to the caves had a guy from the village. I met the French couple and we decided to go there together. We found the guy and he offered to be our guide. The path was rocky and steep and it was not possible to go on foot. We had to ride there on the donkeys. He had three animals. I do not remember why the guy rode with me on one donkey. It was quite an experience :0. Finally, we came to the caves. Entering the dim, shadowy central chamber of the cave, you pause and take in the quiet, your eyes scanning the rocky surfaces. And there they are: crude black markings scattered on the ancient cave walls around you.
Naturally, your eyes are first drawn to the paintings. these 100 or so primitive artworks depict various animal, fish and humanoid figures.
When we came back to the harbor, I was lucky to be the last person that found a place on the boat. The couple had to remain on the island for the night.

In the middle, the village on Levanzo and in the low picture the donkey at the entrance to the cave.
