Photographer's Note
Two girls, sitting in the Piazza del Duomo in the centre of Lecce. Were they looking around at the beautiful architecture? Were they talking to each other? No: they were both in their separate virtual worlds, and both had cigarettes in hand. It makes me feel old when I realise I'm obscurely depressed by a scene like this. I'll be saying that pop music all sounds the same to me soon if I'm not careful.

Hi Will,
Excellent B&W photo. It is a well-chosen framing, in a slight higher-angle shot that works very well graphically, and gives a nice perspective to these two girls. The light and the shades have a beautiful effect on the elements, and all the details are magnificent. Have a great weekend.

hi Will
Wou are so old now! This is the up to date way of visiting a new country! same dress code (jeans and running shoes), sungoggles, cigarette in hand and of course the inevitable blackberry to be in another (fake) world!
Good framing and conversion in B&W picture.
Cheers

As a teacher i see these scenes everyday although my daughter of 16 doesn't have a blackberry or something similair, she doesn't smoke either, so our youngsters aren't all like these girls.
Great shot, well done!!
Kind regards
Eric

I know what you mean. I catch trams a lot here in Melbourne, and couples will get on and do this instead of talking. Most of the 'talk' you hear is people yelling banalities into their phones. The tram fills up with phone zombies all afraid to let go. I like that - 'obscurely depressed'. I find myself laughing, though, when they're hanging on to an overhead rail in a crowded carriage, trying to do this single-handed with an iPad. The photo is stark but so is the contrast in the subject matter, the ancient and the ephemeral.

Andrew

Hello Will,
I agree with you - I feel like that sometimes although it is the cigatettes more than the phones that bothers me. As to music I did read somewhere recently that a scientific analysis of recent popular music has shown that it is more 'samey' (is that a word?) then it was a few decades ago.
Your picture being in b/w lets us concentrate on the message that you want to convey. The old and crumbling stonework perfectly contrasts with the young, modern women. Excellent diagonal composition and use of thirds which works well for this particular subject. What I mean by that is that I probably break the 'thirds' rule more than I abide by it!
Very best wishes, Ann

Hi Will
Very cleverly captured and I really love the style of this and mono works brilliantly. The composition works well with all attention being paid to the "gadget" and not the photographer, they are the iPhone Geeks. Nowadays it's hard to find young people without an iPhone /iPad, laptop etc. to keep up with all this technology. It's part of life just about everyone has a mobile these days but they will soon be implanted from birth and wired to the brain! For me it sums up many folk today who are constantly glued to their iphones etc. oblivious to their surroundings. This is sharp and technically well performed shot. and a great social comment. Well done, TFS
Cheers!

Hi Will
heheheh ahhh the youth of today. It seems universal. I was at a lunch not long ago with 6 adults and 6 kids. Each of the kids did not talk to each other at all the entire time, the were all playing with their iPhones and DS video game machines, and typing into Facebook what a boring time they were having. Your photo captures this disconnection so well. I rarely like seeing young people in B&W, but I think the monochrome choice was a perfect one, reflecting your feelings about it perfectly. You also positioned them well to the left of the frame, giving us a look at some of the classic architecture we might find in Lecce. Lucky you!
Cheers

Hello Will,
Of course all pop music sounds the same. Full of terribly loud repetitive banging sounds with no subtlety whatsoever. In fact, I was stopped at traffic lights just a few days ago and was aware of a horrible banging sound - at first I thought the bearings in my engine had "gone" but then I realised the chap in front had his window open and he was spewing out this dreadful music at full bore into the street. Oh, dear, old age and intolerance.
But this is a very fine take on this couple of girls, oblivious to all that is going on around them, each in their own little world and aware of nothing which is going on about them.
The picture works well in black and white too with lovely tones and contrasts, the textures of the old stonework showing up beautifully.
A fine comment on modern life!
Excellent!
Kind Regards,
John.

I will say this: teaching teenagers gives one a very different perspective on this. I'm painfully aware of how disconnected many teens are to their surroundings now, yet I can also appreciate how connected they are to vastly more than I was at the same age. And, of course, my parents couldn't figure out my music either... I suppose it all moves in circles anyway.
The shot does a nice job of emphasizing what you were trying to say, which is in the end the biggest hallmark of a good photo, isn't it? Well documented.
Andrew
PS - sorry, out of critiques today!

Hi Will. Here you show a small and very personal scene. The photo is original because both girls calls to other people. Yes, this is the modern era. It is truly a blessing for all that everyone has a mobile phone.

Hello Will,
I like this shot ... a simple life capture.
The symmetry of the two girls is amazing.
And the confrontation between the virtual world and the beauty of old architecture is interesting to.
