Mount Ascensione
Mount Ascensione (or Mountain Ascensione) is a survey of 1,108 m above sea level south Apennine Marches, located entirely in the province of Ascoli Piceno and between the municipality of Rotella and that of capital, which dominates with its distinctive profile. At the turn of the valleys of the Tronto, and Tesino, which originates just north near Force, Ascension has a ragged appearance suggesting different figures: according to the observation point can remember sleeping beauty or Profile of Dante. The views from the east northeast and west southwest are perfectly symmetrical.
The mountain is covered by dense vegetation that has earned it in the ancient name of Black Mountain and making it an SPA as well as Floristic Protected Area because of its rich flora. The flora includes broom, tamarisk, hornbeam, maples, oaks and chestnut trees above, the production of fruits which is characteristic of the area.
The mountain is also a destination for excursions and pilgrimages to the church of Our Lady of the Ascension located at the top of the hill. The summit offers a panorama from Spaziante Sibillini and the Gran Sasso and Maiella to the Adriatic Sea.
Behind the Ascension are, in addition to capital and Rotella, the countries of Palmerstown, Venarotta, Ripaberarda and more distant, and Castignano Appignano del Tronto, they also face numerous villages, hamlets of two municipalities, some of which are ancient fortifications the city of Ascoli: Venagrande, Capradosso, Poggio Canoso, Castel di Croce, Montadamo, and Polesio Porchiano. Polesio bears traces of another ancient name of the mountain (Mount Polesio).
The name derives Polesio alternately from the Umbrian deity Esu, or from the Santa Polisia. Polisia is a legendary figure placed in the III-IV century is believed to be the daughter of the prefect Polimio, converted to Christianity and baptized by the bishop Emidio. The father, angry about the conversion, the soldiers gave chase, but the girl was repairing the mountain miraculously swallowed by a sinkhole that suddenly opened. There is a variant of a popular legend, also used in the vicinity, according to which weaves Polisia still on a frame of gold, hidden deep in the mountain. Ascension is also a strategic location for the dissemination of radio and television signals. There are indeed several repeaters public and private broadcasters, located in the town of Ascoli Piceno.
