Church of San Valentino - San Valentino - Scheggino - Umbria
The Church of San Valentino stands in a small open space on the top of the castle of the same name, in a dominant position over the Nera River Valley. The Romanesque building, dedicated to the holy bishop of Terni known for being the protector of lovers, was built around the end of the 12th century. It probably began as an oratory of a monastic cell with an adjacent hospice, then in 1190 it passed to the Abbey of Ferentillo to which it was confirmed in 1231 by Gregory IX. In the 14th century it is reported by the Pelosius codex as belonging to the Plebato di Civitella.
The austere gabled faηade, with a masonry face in a smooth curtain of ashlars, has only two openings: the rectangular portal, surmounted by a massive limestone architrave, probably coming from a pre-existing building, and the small mullioned window that opens above it. The bell tower has a sail, with a single archway, placed centrally, in line with the facade.
The interior is a rare example of Romanesque that has almost entirely preserved the fresco decoration of which, in different eras, it has been enriched to the point of almost completely covering all the walls.

Ciao Caro Silvio,
I like this, it is small and intimate, quite unlike the huge showy city churches. The colourful murals, clearly included, tell the story of Christianity for people who were unlikely to have been able to read text.
It is sad the lower sections of the murals have been destroyed and would certainly benefit from restoration.

Very well captured interior of this little church. I see some of the frescoes were well preserved. The decoration indicates that the chapel is still in use.
Very nice subtle light and optimal exposure.
I am surprised that you didn't keep this photo for Valentine's Day :)

This is a most attractive church. It's nicely small and the walls are covered with beautiful paintings. I could imagine an inviting atmosphere here when the congregation assembles. We can enjoy the fine details thanks to the well handled light.
