Photographer's Note
Good Morning Everyone,
I hope you have enjoyed sharing this brief tour of the Eternal City. I have certainly enjoyed revisiting the photographs, remembering the excitement and researching the buildings that I photographed.
This is Sant'Agnese church in the Piazza Navona, and is a 17th-century Baroque church. It is one of the main urban spaces in the historic centre of the city and the site where the Early Christian Saint Agnes was martyred in the ancient Stadium of Domitian.
In front of the church you can see Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers, topped by the Obelisk of Domitian, brought in pieces from the Circus of Maxentius.
As you can see, the piazza was very popular. Maybe, that was due to the fact that the piazza featured in Dan Brown's 2000 thriller Angels & Demons, in which the Fountain of the Four Rivers is listed as one of the Altars of Science.
I really enjoyed locating this church. I had no idea where it was, as I took the photograph on an early, whistle stop tour of the city, on our first day there!! The Internet is remarkable for the amount of information to be found there!!
I did use PSE10 to correct the the peripheral tilt caused by the lens. I do like to see the building standing upright rather than leaning inwards!
Thanks for your interest.
I know it feels like a long lock-in but it is worth our while for all of us to keep safe, Bev :-)

Hello Beverley,
A fantastic photo of the church and the fountain, indeed well-known thanks to Dan Brown, whose books are one of my guilty pleasures. :-) The light came from the perfect angle and illuminated the obelisk and the church very well. Nice to see all the people visiting the square also, including some taking photo and two policemen.

Hello Bev,
I read "The Da Vinci code" and got tired of Dan Brown after just that one book, which I found to be quite sloppily written. It also spoiled my chances of really seeing the Mona-Lisa during my visit to the Louvre, because the relatively small room was so packed with people all stretching their hands up to try to take photos with their phones.
I didn't know this church featured in another book of his, but it probably explains the abnormal size of the crowd. For you that had the advantage of giving you a more amusing photo. The church and the obelisk are beautiful in any case but not great fun without something extra added to the view. Technically it's another faultless photo.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Beverley, now I don’t remember this area at all, so it is Avery welcome view.
I like the way that the outline of the buildings is set against the lovely blue sky.
Crowds of people in the foreground, that is what we have come to expect, unfortunately.
The obelisk really stands out.
Informative notes, thank you.
We are trying to do as we are told and staying home!
Kind regards, Jean.

Hello Beverley,
As far as I know, Piazza Navona has always been very successful with visitors. The different fountains, the obelisk and the Pantheon have always attracted many tourists.
I must admit that I don't remember the church ... oops ... and also that your picture shows a real crowd.
The dome is well placed between the obelisk and one of the church towers.
I see that two police men are coming closer, probably to keep an eye on the British visitor :)
Best regards, Paul

An exquisite picture of the majestic monuments around the Piazza Navona, beverly.
The Fontana, the Obelisk, dome and towers with lot's of tourists around, gave a fine "visit" to this famous place.
A superb photojob, cheers for that beauty.
Good afternoon,
Ike

Hello Beverley,
you show the beauty of the city very well and also the pressure of the tourist invading the city. I guess even Piazza Navona will be very quiet now.
thanks and regards,
Gerrit

Hello Bev,
What a fascinating and most interesting note you have written!
I didn't think you were all that tall but you have certainly managed to come away with a beautiful photograph shooting above the heads of the crowds before you here!
The church with its beautiful dome and twin bell towers is absolutely stunning and the fountain and tall obelisk before it provide a perfect focal point. And all are depicted perfectly against a lovely azure sky.
Glorious light and colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.
Beautiful!
Take care and stay safe.
Kind Regards,
John.

Hello Bev, I do not think that the Dan Brown book had such an impact. Piazza Navona is a very popular place, always was. For me, it is the most beautiful square in Rome, I knew it already 40 years ago :). But the tourists' invasion is unbearable. I have seen a film on TV about the problems of Venice, Barcelona and Dubrovnik, the inhabitants want to live normally. Rome is a big city but in the centre is the same problem.
excellent view of the church and the obelisk. There are some amusing stories about the rivalry of Bernini and Borromini. Probably just urban legends. Wonderful view. Fantastic colours and sharpness.
You are right, the hole in the Pantheon dome is the best example of Oculus.
Take care

Hi Bev
It's nice to see photos from Italy, even though not taken this year (they are still more recent than mine from Rome). That country is in such a terrible situation.
Lovely image, taken in great light. The people add life. Rome as it used to be not so long ago, as it should be and, hopefully, it will soon be this lively again.
Keep staying safe!

Hi Bev
Now I've been to Piazza Navona but it was nothing to do with Dan Brown - it is just a great square and I was lucky to have a lot less people there. Excellent sharp photo.
cheers

Hi Bev.
What a wonderful photo of Piazza Navona, with the splendid church and Bernini sculpture, number of people enjoying the place, in the future I do not know if we will see numerous concentrations, I think everything can change a lot, excuse me but today I feel a little pessimistic .
Sharpness, lighting, color, and the magnificent composition; they are all perfectly made factors, in this beautiful image.
Well done. I like very much.
You have a good day.
Very best regards.
Luis.
