Photographer's Note

This is a salute to men and women of higher learning like for instance the great Irish mathematician George Salmon of Trinity College depicted in this statue here. These men and women around the world further the arts and sciences for all our benefit.

Trinity College in Dublin which is the backdrop of this statue was founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth. Trinity along with the University of Dublin form Ireland's oldest university.

The depicted George Salmon served as Provost of Trinity from 1888 till his death in 1904. Salmon's math career focused on algebraic geometry and along with Arthur Cayley he discovered the 27 lines on the cubic surface.

The Trinity campus is adjacent to the Temple Bar district in Dublin and it features wonderful old architecture and a library that houses the Book of Kells. My timing for a visit here was good as the campus was quite festive as a result of several ongoing commencement activites.

Cheers,
Doug
