Photographer's Note

Road Bowls is a sport played in a number of countries, and in Ireland it is mostly played in counties Armagh and Cork. The aim of the sport is to throw (underhand) a 28oz iron/steel ball over a set distance of road in the least number of shots (throws). It is thought to have orginated about 300 years ago when soldiers threw cannon balls along roads, and is mentioned in the Sommerville and Ross books on the "Irish RM". In this photo your can see the bowl in mid flight before making contact with the road, played all year round, if you're in the Armagh or Cork area locals in pubs or shops can usually tell you where to see a score (game)with the International games attracting thousands of people to watch.
