Photographer's Note

Beltany Stone Circle is a place I keep coming back to. It dates from 1400-800BC and comprises 64 stones which vary in size up to 2 metres. There is also an altar standing outside the stone circle and a tumulus, or ancient burial mound, within the stone circle.

I took this photo at 11pm during Spring. One thing that amazes me about Ireland is how it doesn't really get dark until about midnight. The light effect was achieved by light-painting the stone with a torch in order to avoid blowing out the colours in the sky. This particular stone is my favourite of all the 64 stones. I must admit that standing in that stone circle at night was pretty spooky.
