Photographer's Note

I've said it before, I'll say it again: Ireland on a sunny day is just about unbeatable. This is Ranafast in Gweedore. County Donegal. You can see in the far distance Mount Errigal. Errigal is 751-metres high, the tallest peak of the Derryveagh Mountains, the tallest peak in County Donegal, and the 76th tallest peak in Ireland. Errigal is also the most southern, steepest and highest of the mountain chain, called the "Seven Sisters" by locals. The Seven Sisters includes Muckish (which has a flat top), Crocknalaragagh, Aghla Beg, Ardloughnabrackbaddy, Aghla More, Mackoght aswell as Errigal.

The title of the photo refers to the yellow gorse which dominate this area during the summertime.

Gweedore is part of the large Gaeltacht region in County Donegal, where Irish Gaelic is the first spoken language. The revival of the Irish language - particularly in the North of Ireland - has been a wonderful thing. Where it was once forbidden on pain of death by the British, it is now flourishing once again. As Padraic Pearse said, "A country without a language is a country without a soul".
