Photographer's Note

This is the tomb of Kossuth, one of the most typical national hero of the Spring of Europe.

Kossuth studied law, he was the leader speaker of the Reform era (1820s-1830s-1840s), member of the first democratically elected Hungarian government, the political leader of freedom fights in 1848/1849.

Then in the prison he learned English. Till his death he was looking for supporters of the case of Hungarian independence. He died in Torino as an emigrant in 1894.

His funeral ceremony was a country-wide silent sad protest against the rank treason of the ideal of independent Hungarian state, indirectly the Habsburgs and the current political elite, and the dualist Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.

The photo was taken in a hot summer day about noon in the largest cemetery of Budapest.
