Photographer's Note

I saw the interior of this beautiful synagogue in 2003, shortly after its restoration was completed. It was built between 1854 and 1859, but heavily damaged during the Second World War. This is one the largest synagogues in the world, it contains 2,964 seats (1,492 for men and 1,472 in the upper galleries for women). The interior of the synagogue was designed by Frigyes Feszl. An unusual feature of it is the huge pipe organ, more often found in Christian churches than in Jewish temples. This grand organ contains about five thousand pipes and was built in 1859. This instrument is often used for concerts. Another view of the interior is shown in the Workshop.
