Photographer's Note

This monument is located below the Benedictine Abbey of Tihany, which is up on the top of a small hill. The monument commemorates that King Andrew founded the Abbey in1055, and buried in its church five years later. He was a directs descendant of Grand Chief Arpad, the founder of the Hungarian nation. His wife Queen Anastasia was the daughter of the Kievan duke Jaroslaw the Wise. The statue is the work of Ukrainian sculptor Bohdan Korcs and was dedicated in 2001 in the presence of Ukrainian and Hungarian officials. The king is depicted holding the Royal Charter he issued in 1055. This is the first known document where some of the text is written in Hungarian language. It is kept with great reverence at the main Benedictine Abbey in Pannonhalma.
