Photographer's Note

You can see the Maroulas' statue, the windswept olive tree and the Church of the Life Giving Spring, at the Kotsinas bay of Lemnos island.

In 1478 the Turks tried to take over Kotsinas but according to legend, a young girl named Maroula, encouraged the castle defenders to keep the enemy at bay after she witnessed her own father perish under the turkish sword. Her name became a legend in the island and there was a statue erected in her honor, right where the castle used to be. The area is perfect for swimming and the local taverns are always on call for fresh fish.
