Photographer's Note
Petra is a lovely coastal area on Patmos, about 6km south-east from Chora, the town in and around the Castle.
There's a long and beautiful beach there with the same name. "Petra" means stone in greek and at the northern end of the beach there's a huge rock which had been used as a hermitage many centuries ago.
Behind the beach, there's a large flat area, a lake where birds like swans, wild ducks and erodius find shelter during winter.
The rock is also called Kalikatsou, a name used for a small crow (jackdaw) that used to live there. (http://www.holiday.gr)
In summer the flat area can serve different kinds of "birds":)
From Wikipedia:
Powered paragliding, also known as paramotoring, is a form of ultralight aviation where the pilot wears a motor on his back (a paramotor) which provides enough thrust to take off using an adapted paraglider or paramotor wing. It can be launched in still air, and on level ground, by the pilot alone — no assistance is required.[...]
The paramotor, weighing from 45 to 80 pounds (20 to 36 kg) is supported by the pilot during takeoff. After a brief run (typically 10 feet or 3 metres) the wing lifts the motor and its harnessed pilot off the ground. After takeoff, the pilot gets into the seat and sits suspended beneath the inflated paraglider wing. Control is available using brake toggles for roll and a hand-held throttle for pitch.
Prices for a complete new package (wing, harness, and motor) vary from approximately $6000 USD to $9500 USD
Workshop: A picture with a little closer look at the engine, taken a little while before this one, during preparation.
Thank you for visiting, a lovely week to all

Perfect moment of touch-down collected, Ourania.
A sport I have never done, probably will not do...
You managed to include a part of the coast and bay, with some spactators watching and amazed.
Loverly red contrast.

Hello Ourania,
An activity not for the faint-hearted:-) You have framed the intrepid para-glider well setting him in context. Good colours and sharpness.

Bonjour Ourania,
Amicalement

Wow! Great timing shot! I have had an experience with parashoot. And I can say these were fantasting feelings and emotions!
But I see this man is just a Carlson with an engine on the back. Amazing adventure!

Hi Ourania,
You caught this at the perfect moment, just as the feet make touchdown. No doubt the most heart stopping moment :) Great composition on the scene too.
I must wonder if the other Petra, the city desert gets its name from the same word.
All the best

Hello Ourania,
You have given us two fine photographs as well as a very interesting and informative note about how to go about "paramotoring". Much though I enjoy powered flight and would love to fly a small aircraft, I don't think I'd have the guts at my age to try out this sort of thing! But I'm sure you can feel "free as a bird" up there - until you run out of petrol.
An excellent action shot with the pilot running with wing and engine and about to take off into the skies. The large red wing dominates the picture wonderfully yet we still see a lovely distant view of boats, houses and mountains.
Lovely light and colours, perfect exposure and excellent detail and sharpness.
Excellent!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hello Ourania,
This photo combines very well a beautiful view with an exciting moment. The pilot's choice of a red wing was of course like a gift from heaven for you, because the bright red curved shape is an unbeatable eye-catcher. You pressed the button at a perfect mment, just as we see the pilot taking off, both feet just above the ground. The "airfield" may be suitable because it's large and flat, but from your POV you also managed to give the picture a very nice background of a bay of the sea with several boats and two hillsides providing fine diagonals. The bystanders watching the take-off add more life.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hi Ourania
A leap of faith here! I also appreciate the timely release of shutter keeping the feet off the ground nicely. Great weather, lovely background and surrounding area with the red canopy perfectly caught, beautifully composed with very attractive colours. Well done shot, Congrats.

Ciao Ourania
il paracadute rosso θ un vero e proprio stacco di colore su tutto il resto.
Ottima la dinamicitΰ che crea l'azione dell'uomo, anche questa in perfetto contrasto con la staticitΰ che trapela dallo sfondo.

Hi Ourania,
Interesting little contraption! I like your timing. Composition is very masterful. I wonder if I can do paramotoring now, imagine the photos one can take from the air!

Hello Ourania
Nice capture of the landing here. Is this a hobby of yours? I have to say it is something I wish I could try but I have a fear of heights!
I like the shape of the 'chute - like a giant red eyelid! The whole activity looks very relaxed - in the UK there would be all kinds of health and safety issues to deal with before you could even get off the ground!
TFS
Mike
