Photographer's Note
Ancient Greek theatre was a theatrical culture that flourished in ancient Greece from 700 BC. The city-state of Athens, which became a significant cultural, political, and religious place during this period, was its centre, where the theatre was institutionalised as part of a festival called the Dionysia, which honoured the god Dionysus. Tragedy (late 500 BC), comedy (490 BC), and the satyr play were the three dramatic genres to emerge there. Athens exported the festival to its numerous colonies. Modern Western theatre comes, in large measure, from the theatre of ancient Greece, from which it borrows technical terminology, classification into genres, and many of its themes, stock characters, and plot elements.
I have seen quite many ruins of Greek theatres - in Athens, Delphi, also in Pergamon in Turkey and in
Sicily. I am always fascinated by the construction and the acoustic quality.
The ancient theatre of Epidaurus was designed by Polykleitos the Younger in the 4th century BC. The original 34 rows were extended in Roman times by another 21 rows. As is usual for Greek theatres (and as opposed to Roman ones), the view on a lush landscape behind the skκnκ is an integral part of the theatre itself and is not to be obscured. It seats up to 14,000 people.
The theatre has long had a reputation for its exceptional acoustics, which reportedly allowed almost perfect intelligibility of unamplified spoken words from the proscenium or skēnē to all 14,000 spectators, regardless of their seating. The acoustic properties are caused both by the physical shape, but also the construction material: the rows of limestone seats filter out low-frequency sounds, such as the murmur of the crowd, and also amplify the high-frequency sounds of the stage.
Two other views in Workshops. All better seen in the large format.

Hello Malgo,
I waited patiently for your w/s, too!
I am a great fan of such theatres where, as you note, the acoustics are remarkable!
This is a particularly well preserved example and, with your w/s, you have been able to share the beauty of the design as well as as level of preservation.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Malgo,
Three good photos showing the elegant design of the theatre and in the main photo also quite a lot of the attractive surrounding scenery. The tourists give us a good idea of the size of the theater. I guess you saw a theatre in Delfi, not Delft in the Netherlands. ;-)
(There are some impressive theaters like this in Jordan too. Maybe that's where you are heading soon...?)

Hi Malgo,
The wideness of the area is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the details of the greek theater and of the mountains. The quality of the light beautifies the colors. Have a nice day.

Ciao Malgo,it is always difficult to choose the perspective from the ancient Greek and Roman theaters, and you never manage to make it all fit .. ahaha .. your excellent solution, the two WS looking in opposite directions and this almost complete view with large green on the background, one of the most famous and most visited theaters but always nice to see. Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

Ciekawa notatka i seria zdjec.
Ciekawa prezentacja
pozdrawiam
Piotr

Hello Malgo,
I remember seeing an evening theater performance in Epidaurus during my 1978 Peloponnese trip. In 2009 I went there again during the day (with another travel companion who had not been there before).
From a graphical point of view, I think your photo in WS2 is the most beautiful.
But I definitely really like your main photo which also shows a wonderful landschape with mountains and a lot of trees.
Strange but the Peloponnese is a very dry region and in this picture it looks so green.
The visitors are nicely spread over the theatre.
I didn't realize that the view of a lush landscape was such an important difference between Greek and Roman theaters.
Best regards, Paul

Hi Malgo
Although I have seen many antique theatres in Turkey, a few in Greece and even 1 each in Bulgaria & Egypt, I have not yet seen Epidaurus. The people animate the scene and provide scale. Tfs!

Good morning Malgo,
Nicely allocated the pic. space from the Ampheteatre with people to the green hills and mountains beyond and blur sky above.
Both Greeks and Romans had the skill to build such a maginificent semi-shell theatres.
Have a nice new week,
Ike

Hello Malgo,
Many things about this theater are impressive, its age, the amount of people it holds, and the acoustic quality. I like your POV, looking down with the trees and hills in the distance. Take care!
