Ruins of large amphorae, Philippi Archaelogical Site, Macedonia.
Amphorae were used in vast numbers for the transport and storage of various products, both liquid and dry, but mostly for wine. They are most often ceramic, but examples in metals and other materials have been found. Versions of the amphorae were one of many shapes used in Ancient Greek vase paintings.
Because of its rich and centuries-old history, the archaeological site of Philippi offers visitors an insight into Greek, Roman and Byzantine art and architecture. Among the archaeological finds brought to light during the excavations carried out in the area include parts of the walls erected by Philip II, the acropolis, the theatre, the Roman forum, Basilica A, Basilica B and the Octagonal Basilica.

Cial Alex, certainly a difficult job, but they managed to perfectly reconstruct these amphorae split into many pieces and now held together thanks to the wooden structure. Perhaps they deserve a museum or a better location. Another interesting post in search of details to Philippi. Have a nice weekend and thanks,Luciano
