Photographer's Note
I went to Crete with my family for beach holidays. But in addition to beautiful beaches, Crete offers spectacular hiking opportunities, the most famous being the hike through the Samaria Gorge. Unfortunately, I have gave up on that aspect of the island completely. August is extremely hot and therefore it is not the best season for hiking. However, on the way to some beaches, I have occasionally passed truly breath taking canyons. As mentioned before, roads were most of the time so bad that I did not want to make extra stops in the middle of a road blocking potential traffic in both directions. In those difficult moments I really gave up on photography holding the steering wheel very tightly with both hands. This photo maybe does not show a very impressive view, but it was taken from a place where the road edge was secured with dedicated parking spaces available.
I must admit that it was first time that I was so poorly prepared for holidays. The reason for that was that I originally intended to go to Bulgaria, and even after I changed my booking to Crete, to the last day I was not sure whether Boris Johnson will cancel my holidays or not. Luckily, he did not. If I were better prepared, I would know that from this very parking spot there is a head trail to the picturesque Kourtaliotiko Gorge Waterfalls. One more reason to get back to Crete again.

Hello Mariusz,
Very frustrating to be somewhere where the scenery is very beautiful but the circumstances don't allow to take a picture.
Here you were able to combine the footpath (perhaps a donkey path) with the motorway.
Shade seems difficult to find.
What is then the ideal season to hike through the Samaria Gorge?
Best regards, Paul

Hello Mariusz,
You chose a nice angle with blue sky, a view between the two high mountains.
Create nice depth and perspective.
Nice composition and perfect presentation.
Very well done, TFS.
Best regards,
John

Hello Mariusz, maybe the beach is just over the brow of the hill?
We get a real impression of the landscape on Crete, very little vegetation and a lot of bare rock, am I right?
Your picture makes much more sense if one reads your notes.
Thanks for sharing, kind regards, Jean.

Hello Mariusz,
A beautiful view of this canyon, the rocks look wonderful with different colours and very sharp and clearly seen shapes. The blue sky in the centre makes a great backdrop.

Hi Mariusz
Another good photo from Crete. Samaria Gorge is problematic - stinking hot in summer and even in between seasons. We went to do the walk in November but got there only to find out that it had closed for the season.
cheers

Hello dear friend and have a nice day
your question is absolutely correct...
a landscape here with rocks,mountains
and desert roads...
which is the way to the beach...
however there are too many beautiful
beaches behind these difficult
passages...a adventure for you...
regards
Costantino

Hello Mariusz,
Greece is well known for narrow roads and steep inclines. The very first time that we went, I was sure the wheels of the bus were going over the edge of a cliff, but the drivers are well experienced ...! I suppose tourists are not so experienced but what excitement!!
You really capture the character of the terrain and the steepness of the gorges. The road becomes the safety link and makes a very pleasing compositional line to the disappearing point.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Mariusz,
Crete inland terrain is mostly rocks and mountains.
We did not visit this area, which looks dry and mostly not inahbited.
A fine take by the side of the road.
Good afternoon,
Ike

Mariuz, Crete offers hiking opportunities but to walk under the hard summer sun is really not confortable. Nice view of these rocky slopes and the gorge. Fine colors, good sharpness, regards.

Musisz tam wrocic i masz racje w gorach lato bywa meczace, ale wraz z wysokoscia upal mniej dokucza - zapas wody i w droge :)
Jazda po takich serpentynach bywa zaskakujaca - nigdy nie wiesz co bedzie zza zakretem ;)
Ladny kadr z tego miejsca i ciekawa kolorystyka skal.
pozdrawiam
Piotr

Hello Mariusz,
I would guess, the dirt path leads to the beach. But after reading your note, maybe that's the way to the waterfalls. This looks almost like a desert.

Ciao Mariusz
I mostly chilled out in Heraklion and Chania before heading to Kefalonia and Zakynthos, so missed the hiking. I also decided long hikes in hot summer weather weren't a good idea. Excellent sharpness and the road adds perspective. Tfs!
