Photographer's Note
***LARGE VERSION***
I have been thinking to write something about what's happening in Athens those last 3 days, but I keep suspending it, because I am trying to put myself together and see things with more clear head and collectedness. If I write something right now (and i want to write A LOT, about many aspects of social and political life in Greece, about the politics, the police, the religion, the scandals and the violence, about the broken "unwritten" laws of street fighting etc), I would sound too radical.
The cold blooded murder of the 15 year old studend, by 2 pigs-cops, took place no more than 100 metres from my home. Yes, I am one of the residents of Exarcheia, this "square of evil", the base of the anarchists, the masquetears, blah, blah, blah, etc. I thought that by growing up, I would change my mind about the cops, but no, there's no such thing as a good cop! Good cop is only the...
Anyway, I could write a whole analysis about the facts that led to this situation, because there is a huge background, and the murder of Alexis was only the spark! I hope I'll have the chance to do it in the next days.
Meanwhile, as a first "comment", I would like to dedicate one of my favourite songs, to Alexis and all those fighting out in the streets. So here are the lyrics of Guns of Brixton by The Clash:
"When they kick at your front door
How you gonna come?
With your hands on your head
Or on the trigger of your gun
When the law break in
How you gonna go?
Shot down on the pavement
Or waiting on death row
You can crush us
You can bruise us
But youll have to answer to
Oh, the guns of brixton
The money feels good
And your life you like it well
But surely your time will come
As in heaven, as in hell
You see, he feels like Ivan
Born under the Brixton sun
His game is called survivin
At the end of the harder they come
You know it means no mercy
They caught him with a gun
No need for the black maria
Goodbye to the Brixton sun
You can crush us
You can bruise us
Yes, even shoot us
But oh-the guns of Brixton

This is a great panorama of Athens. The sunset is wonderful providing an excellent glow in the sky and across the city. The blending of natural and artificial lighting is great making for a very appealing shot.

Yassou Irakli,
I'm sorry to hear the boy has been killed. I don't know the story but there's no explanation for things like that. I also think that cops are violent people and don't like them. I understand your anger...
The photo is wonderful. Without your story, looking at those lights and beautiful sunset one could think only of nice things that happen around here. But unfortunately nowhere on Earth you can't avoid murders, injustice, and all the bad things, you just have to live with it. And that's what causes anger.
Have a nice day, cheer up! :)

Hi dear Hercules, my dear friend !
We also follow here what's happening in Athen's right now with deep sorrow. As all those sad things are also very well known by ourselves; since sixties, also our young history book is full of such "black pages" . But Athens, this is something quite different. Athens, since the antiquity the cradle of modern democracy, should not mark its great history with such brutalities.
Your wonderfull capture, with warm bright colors and perfect compo, gives this message perfectly to all of us !
TFS and best regards

Hi Hercules
The old Rolling Stones song "Street Fighting Man" comes to mind, too. It was released about the time of the Paris university riots in 1968. A superb fiery sunset & high pov overlooking Athens. Tfs!

It's a beautiful night panorama Hercules expecially in the Large version we can see many details of your city , the sky colours are simply beautiful , concerning the sad situation you are living in these days I've seen on TV a great movement of students against school reorganization , we are having almost the same problems here in italy (globalization?), at the moment the protest is less strong than there , and luckily we had not died students , I really hope our and also your government will open their mind and hear the voice of people/students and stop violence otherwise future is dark .
Ciao Stefano.

hello Hercules,
you show us a magnificent cityscape filled with light but your note tells us that it has a darker side. I felt surprised and even shocked at the news of the rioting and wondered if you would comment on it. What a terrible thing, to shoot a 15 year old.I guess this trouble has its roots in such a relatively recent return to democracy. I only know what I see on television news but will read the newspapers to find out more. And I would be interested to know your views when you decide you can share them.
best regards and tke care,

Dear Hercules,
I would have liked to congratulate you for this beautiful photo but I cannot because of your note. I hope you are writing under the influence of emotions, but there should be no place on this site for expressions like "pigs-cops", "there is no such thing as a good cop", and most offending of all the suggestive phrase "good cop is only the...". This is way over the top.
Please note that I have not any personal or professional relation to police or armed forces.
Police in Athens might have behaved very wrongly and I hope justice will sort it out. But there is no place in our democracies for hate messages against part of the population because of their race, religion, sex or profession.
I believe you should withdraw your photo from TE.
I cannot possibly send you my kind regards at this moment but they are reserved for you as soon as you would reckognise your mistake.

Hallo Hercules!
A really worth seeing photo - and a worth reading note indeed! The photo show a splendour which obviously isn't in accordance with reality in this city. These dark clouds above these sparkling streets are a bit like a "writing on the wall"...
I even can detect the ancient Olympic stadium where I have been in 1968 ;-)
All the best to you and your fellow countrymen!

I've seen so many pictures of Athens and most of them are unattractive due to the modern and disordered architecture. But here the night conceal all that and the city seems to possess both the grandeur and armony of Paris. All that sparkling lights and the red hue made the miracle.
Well done,

Agapitos filos Hrakli,
Sorry, I don’t have point anymore, but I wanted to send you these small words this morning before leaving my house.
Greece lives maybe today what many of the ancient European democracies are soon going to live.
I say ancient because for me, the democracy does not exist any more in France as in many of the other countries.
The laws pass by decrees when they do not pass to the parliament, we find billions to be given to banks when people die from cold every day in the street, the police comes to search the children schools with dogs, a bill wants to authorize to put the children in prison from the age of 12 years, we remove the teaching of the history in secondary schools... it is the situation in France. And I could speak about many of the other scandalous and inhuman things.
Alexis was the unfortunate glistens who set fire to a situation which cannot last any more in Europe.
Shall manage we to change this world? I hope for it because it is really crooked.
Thank you for your testimony which changes what we hear in the media and bravo for Greece still capable of decreeing a general strike.
My thoughts are in Greece today.

The peaceful evening scene is a pleasure to look at. Not at all indicative of the latest problems that we have seen on TV. It is unfortunate that there is so much corruption amongst those that are supposed to uphold the law.

Very effective photo. Expresses the present state of mind of Greece. I observe it in the television the happened at you sad and shocking events. I see pictures living in all news. The relation of the power and the society is a heavy question at us. I would not like to sink in the problems now. There are many unresolved social questions here. Take care!

After reading all the news about Greece in the Hellenic and foreign press the last days, I take time to visit TE... Thanks to live in you time, in the heart of your city, among the real people. I know Exarchia which is 5 min from the place where I stay when I'm in Athens. A nice and alive area, popular, alternative. The only danger there are... the cops, arrogant, provocative... and killers.

Khaire, Hercules -
Too beautiful a photo for so ugly a story. We are following it out here in the West, though it does get pushed out the front page by the latest scandal over Sarah Palin's makeup. < sigh >
I won't go so far as Paul, but I do have to say that there are good cops in the world (I can't speak for Greek cops) as well as bad. Cops tend to be the people who deal with the messy parts of our lives; they get to see us at our worst, whether as victims or criminals, and it can easily sour them.
That does not excuse this murder, of course. Nothing can.
Anyway, it's a lovely picture.
