Photographer's Note

The tradition to set up May trees or May poles is widespread in Germany and can be found in Rhineland, Bavaria and other areas. But the are some differences.

Rhenish May trees are simple firs which have been stripped off their bark and lower branches, set up before May 1st and intended to stand only for a few weeks. It is the pride of the local bachelors to erect them without help of motorized machines, using only pure physical strength and simple mechanical tricks.
Bavaria May trees are painted white-blue (do never say blue-white!), intended to remain in use for several years and they show pretty signs with the insignia of the local crafts. This one at Aying was set up in 2018.
There would have been no occasion to replace him in 2020 oder 2021...
