Photographer's Note
“BERLIN” – Tauentzienstrasse
The sculpture "BERLIN" was one of the sculptures unveiled on the occasion of the city's 750th anniversary in 1987.
The sculpture, designed by the artist couple Brigitte & Martin Matschinsky-Denninghoff consists of huge four steel tubes that extend upwards. Each tube is about two meters in diameter and meanders into the air. The ends seem to meet each other, but find no real connection.
The symbol of the proximity and isolation between the two sides of Berlin
The statue stands in the green median strip of the Tauentzienstrasse that connects the famous Gedδchtniskirche with the equally famous KDW – Kaufhaus des Westens
After the Wall was dismantled and the original lease expired, the sculpture was purchased by the city to commemorate this period in German history.

Bonjour, cher ami Rob,
Amitiιs.

Hi Rob,a statue built just in time to celebrate the divisions of Berlin that would disappear soon after. The fact that she stayed there to celebrate the years of division after the long cold war is a good thing, to remind young people of what happened in the years of our youth. The photos need no comment, always perfect and very original, especially looking at the main one. Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano

Hello Rob,
As usual you gradually let us understand what we are looking at. I think many persons will look at this and wonder "what the heck is this", just vaguely realizing it's a sculpture, because the title says so, and we know you a bit. The main photo is very original and the shapes rather fascinating, then in the WS we see step by step the entire sculpture. Assisted by the note we see what the artists wanted us to see: two societies being so close and never meeting. It's an interesting work of art and I like how you have presented it.
Best regards,
Gert

Goedemiddag Rob,
Uw foto u-is goed genomen, zonder dat ik het las dacht ik aan de scheiding van de twee Duits landen Oost en West.
Maar de details zijn goed zichtbaar met de structure van de buis.
Goed foto werk, bedankt.

Hello Rob,
Only when I saw the WS#2, managed to comprehend the idea here.
The close up main picture may explain what was true till 1989 when town was united.
But, only imagination can provide such thoughts.
Merely myy humble opinion, sincerely.
Good afternoon,
Ike

Hallo Rob,
Van zo dichtbij had ik dit kunstwerk nog niet bekeken en ook het verhaal erachter is interessant. De details van de dunne lijnen en de verschillende zilveren tinten zijn mooi zichtbaar tegen de bomen op de achtergrond.

Hello Rob, once again you grab our attention by showing us a close view, what are these strange shapes?
It is a very interesting sculpture; and as I look at the whole work, I am left wondering... how was it made? And how was it placed in its present situation where the parts are almost interlinked?
The people in picture three do give us a good idea of the scale.
I certainly like the symbolism.
Thanks for sharing, kind regards, Jean.

Hello Rob, Without looking at Workshop pictures it is difficult to guess what we see here. Original composition. Many years have passed but somehow the division is still there.
Best regards MAlgo

Hello Rob,
I applaud the sharpness and the cropping of your photographs to supply us with such excellent details of this sculpture.
I understand the symbolism of the piece and like your main post and photograph 2 but, for some reason, the whole sculpture leaves me cold. Maybe it is because as a whole, it resembles intestines!
My warm regards,
Bev :-)
